About
Fundamentals of Gun Safety is an NRA-produced firearm safety video hosted by Susan Howard and Steve Canale. The program is introduced through three featured gun owners: Ben, a trap shooter with multiple shotguns; Sharon, a competitive handgun shooter at a local gun club; and Walter, a first-time hunter. The hosts present these individuals as representative responsible gun owners to frame the safety instruction that follows.
The program covers the NRA's fundamental rules of safe gun handling, demonstrated through Ben, Sharon, and Walter. The three core rules are: always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction; always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot; and always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use. The program explains the NRA Eddie Eagle program for children, noting that over two million children had learned the program's stop-don't touch-leave-tell an adult rule at time of production. Firearm types are explained, covering shotguns by gauge and their use of shot pellets, rifles and handguns that use bullet cartridges by caliber, and action types including hinge, pump, bolt, lever, and semi-automatic for long guns, and revolvers and semi-automatics for handguns.
Seven additional safety rules are listed covering knowledge of firearm operation, ammunition compatibility, carrying only one caliber, target awareness, eye and ear protection, and avoiding alcohol and drugs while shooting. A quiz segment recaps the main points. The program closes with references to the NRA book Home Firearm Safety and NRA-certified instructor courses, and directs viewers to contact the NRA Education and Training Division.
