About
Eyewitness Shark is a documentary program from the BBC Eyewitness series, structured around a detective narrative investigating a shark attack on a surfboard and framed by the Eyewitness Shark book.
The program covers 400 million years of shark evolutionary history, from the hagfish and early jawless creatures through the dogfish and cartilaginous skeleton design, the diversity of shark species including the megamouth discovered in 1976, horn shark and chain dogfish egg cases, bonnethead live birth, lemon shark nursery lagoons, shark anatomy including the ampullae of Lorenzini for electrical detection, the lateral line, denticle-covered skin, fin function and hydrodynamics, continuously replaced teeth and species-specific dentition across cookie-cutter, tiger, sand tiger, basking, and megamouth sharks, ray anatomy and the eagle ray, the great white feeding behavior, remora relationships, radio tracking technology, and the five species with a record for attacking people: tiger, blue, great white, oceanic whitetip, and bull shark. Cultural material spans Pacific Islander shark mythology including the goddess Kuahupa, Hawaiian volcano-and-shark creation stories, Polynesian shark veneration, Fijian shark-kissing ritual, Solomon Islander shark charms, and Shakespeare's use of shark imagery in Macbeth. The program closes with statistics on human shark kills versus shark human kills.
The behind-the-scenes segment describes building a South Seas island shrine in the Eyewitness studio, filming small sharks against blue for compositing, and recreating the shark goddess Kuahupa using an actress on a moving platform with a wind machine and layered underwater backgrounds.
