About

Eyewitness Insect is a documentary program from the BBC Eyewitness series, produced in the series' signature white-background studio format and drawing on the Eyewitness Insect book as its structural foundation.

The program examines insect biology and ecology across a broad range: what defines an insect, the exoskeleton and its size limitations, the history of insects dating back 300 million years to ancient dragonflies with two-foot wingspans, the parallel evolution of insects and flowering plants through coevolution, reproductive strategies from asexual aphid reproduction to complete and incomplete metamorphosis, the evolution of winged flight, aquatic adaptations in dragonflies, damselflies, water boatmen, and pond skaters, compound eye structure and ultraviolet color perception, sound communication in crickets and bush crickets, pheromone detection in moths, ant colony organization and leafcutter farming, termite architecture, chemical defenses including formic acid and bombardier beetle explosions, camouflage in stick insects and butterflies, warning coloration, the role of bees in pollination and honey production, disease transmission by tsetse flies and fleas, pesticide resistance, and insects as ecological recyclers. Cultural and historical references include the scarab beetle in Egyptian religion, cochineal dye for British military uniforms, and the 14th-century bubonic plague.

The behind-the-scenes segment describes the Eyewitness editing suite's method of compositing insect images against white backgrounds, a cockroach sequence involving an unprepared actor, a leafcutter ant picnic demonstration, and a three-day 3D morphing effect transforming a car into a rhinoceros beetle.
