About
A fitness instruction video produced by the National Institute on Aging, a division of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, running approximately 48 minutes. The host is Margaret Richard, who leads a seated and standing exercise program designed specifically for adults over fifty. The program opens with a medical disclaimer recommending that men over 40 and women over 50 planning vigorous exercise consult a physician first, and notes that exercise is safe for people with managed chronic conditions including heart disease and diabetes.
The workout covers four categories of exercise emphasized by the NIA: strength training using light hand weights, balance exercises, endurance activity, and stretching. Specific exercises demonstrated include bicep curls, shoulder flexion raises with palm rotation, seated leg extensions, and standing stretches with clasped overhead arm extensions. The program closes with a recommended weekly schedule of daily endurance and stretching sessions alternating with every-other-day strength training. Viewers are directed to call 1-800-222-2225 or visit the NIA online to request a free copy of the accompanying exercise guide.
