About
A children's educational video covering three types of forest ecosystems, hosted by animated characters including a toucan representing the rainforest and a bear representing the deciduous forest. The program opens by defining forests as ecosystems where trees are the major life form and oxygen suppliers before covering each forest type in sequence.
The rainforest section, set partly at a Puerto Rico field location, covers the canopy, understory, and forest floor layers, rainfall of up to 1,200 centimeters annually, colorful animal camouflage, and species diversity. The deciduous forest section introduces black bears, the four-season structure, leaf litter on the forest floor, and layers comparable to the rainforest. A soil filtration experiment using cheesecloth and containers is included. The coniferous forest section covers cone-bearing evergreens, colder and drier conditions than deciduous forests, and birds of prey such as raptors as representative wildlife.
The program is part of a multi-volume Ecosystems for Children series.
