About

The first volume in a four-volume Qigong video series titled Discovering Qi, taught by Linda Madero. The tape opens with an extended sequence of Taoist text from the Tao Te Ching attributed to Lao Tzu, repeating the phrase "a thousand mile journey begins with but one step" before the instructional content begins. The first volume covers the theoretical foundation of the five elements system, the introductory horse stance, breathing principles, and the first two stages of Madero's four-part emotional Qigong form. A detailed description of all four stages is presented before the practice session.

Madero explains that her emotional Qigong is organized as two active stages followed by two quiet stages. Stage one, the bouncing phase beginning at 50:29, involves continuous bouncing from the knees at a pace determined by the practitioner's emotional state, allowing suppressed feelings to surface. Stage two, the free-form movement section beginning at 52:41, allows self-directed movement guided by whatever emotion or color impression emerges. Stage three, beginning at 54:52, is a sitting or lying down meditation lasting approximately ten minutes, cued by a change in the background music. Stage four, beginning at 56:39, is a journal writing section for completing the emotional process.
