About
A travel documentary narrating the history, culture, and natural landscape of the Hawaiian Islands, organized by island. The program opens with Polynesian migration history, tracing settlement from the Marquesas around 300 to 500 A.D. and a later migration from the vicinity of Tahiti between 1100 and 1300. Oral tradition, hula, and chant are established as the cultural foundation before the island-by-island coverage begins.
Kauai is presented first, covering Waimea Canyon, the Wailua River, Hanalei Valley taro farming by the Haraguchi family, Kilauea Point wildlife refuge, the Ileao plant found nowhere else on Earth, and the lei-weaving tradition. The Big Island section covers Hilo Bay, lava fields, Kilauea volcano and the legend of Pele, macadamia nut cultivation, and the Parker Ranch, described as one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States, with ranch hands descended from Mexican vaqueros brought in the 1800s. Molokai is covered through its pineapple plantation, Lanai's history, and the Kalaupapa leprosy settlement established under Father Damien. Maui is introduced at 58:25 as the second largest island, covering Lahaina's whaling history and Haleakala. Oahu is covered beginning at 01:08:37, including Waikiki, Honolulu, Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, and the windward Ko'olau Range. The program closes with underwater footage from Molokini Island.
