About

A National Geographic documentary on severe storms, covering tornadoes and hurricanes in two extended sections. The tape opens with two promotional segments for other National Geographic titles, The New Chimpanzees and Secrets of the Titanic, before the main program begins at 02:01.

The tornado section profiles meteorologist Dr. Howard Bluestein of the University of Oklahoma and traces the scientific history of tornado research, including Dr. Ted Fujita's arrival from Japan in 1953 and his development of the Fujita Scale using wind damage analysis and a laboratory tornado machine at the University of Chicago. The April 1974 super outbreak of 148 tornadoes across 13 states and the 1991 Andover, Kansas tornado are covered in detail. The hurricane section covers storm chaser Jim Leonard, the formation and anatomy of Atlantic hurricanes, and the track of Hurricane Andrew from August 17, 1992 through its landfall in South Florida. The Hurricane Research Division in Miami and meteorologist Stanley Goldenberg are identified as research sources.

The program closes with a segment on New Orleans' vulnerability to a direct hurricane strike, noting the city's drainage system of 21 pumps and the risk of 30 feet of standing water in below-sea-level neighborhoods. Former National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Sherwood is identified as a local expert.
