About

Chihuly in Action is a short documentary program hosted by Lucas Lowry and Shane Nutt, covering Dale Chihuly's work with the Hilltop Artisan Residence program in Tacoma, Washington. The program documents a glass art workshop organized to re-engage at-risk youth through hands-on creative work.

The Hilltop Artisan Residence is described as founded by Kathy Kuparek, with Chihuly as her mentor and supporter. The program targets young people who had left school or were at risk of dropping out, using glass art as a vehicle for re-engagement with the community. The workshop footage shows the project expanding organically, with additional youth drawn in from the surrounding neighborhood after seeing the activity underway.

A recurring theme is the river as the organizing metaphor for the installation. Chihuly reflects that workshops like this one may produce future artists, or simply give participants a passion and vision for what they want to do. The program closes with music.
