About

Castles of Scotland, Vol. 3 opens with Fort George near Inverness, described as the most considerable fortress in Britain and one of the most outstanding artillery fortifications in the world, before returning to Edinburgh Castle for a dedicated treatment of its memorial and symbolic functions.

Fort George is covered in extensive detail: built at over £200,000, double its original estimate, it housed 2,000 inhabitants including officers, gunners, storekeepers, and a governor with a Doric portico residence. Materials were brought by sea from multiple Scottish quarries. The barracks interior documents the squalor of ordinary soldiers' quarters, where men slept two to a bed, eight to a room, and married quarters offered only a blanket for privacy. The grand magazine, capable of holding 2,500 barrels of powder, used no ferrous metals and copper-clad doors to prevent sparks. No shot was ever fired over its ramparts, as the Jacobite threat had passed before construction was complete.

Edinburgh Castle's closing segment focuses on its role as the Scottish National War Memorial, with sculptures symbolizing survival, mercy, justice, and courage. A shrine beneath a statue of St Michael contains a casket with the names of Scottish war dead. The program closes with a visit to Culzean Castle, described as Robert Adam's final masterpiece on an Ayrshire clifftop.
