About
Castles of Scotland, Vol. 2 is the second tape in the documentary series, opening with Eilean Donan Castle on the road to Skye and continuing through additional Scottish properties. The series maintains its focus on the intersection of architecture, clan history, and national conflict.
Eilean Donan is covered in depth, including its origins as a Viking defense point for the Mackenzies and Macraes, its near-total destruction in 1719 when English warships bombarded it during a Jacobite uprising garrisoned by 48 Spanish troops, and its 20th-century reconstruction by Lieutenant Colonel John Macrae Gilstrap. Internal features shown include a 14-foot-thick billeting room, the banqueting hall with oak-beamed ceiling and a cutlery vase centerpiece, a baptismal font, and a fireplace carved with the family arms. The Gaelic inscription above the door is translated and its history recounted.
Caerlaverock Castle reappears in this volume, with an account of the angry siege of 1300 drawn from a contemporary French source. The Maxwell family's ongoing ownership is noted, with their seat later moved to Terregles before returning. Glamis Castle is covered again through its royal family connections, including a sitting room created by the Queen Mother's mother as a retreat from public life, and a 1716 visit by James VIII.
