About
Castles of Scotland, Vol. 1 is the first tape in a documentary series surveying Scotland's historic fortifications, covering eight properties across the country. The series opening frames Scotland's castle landscape as a record of treachery, romance, war, and peace spanning from early kingship through the Jacobite era.
Castles covered include Caerlaverock, guarding the Solway Firth for 400 years and destroyed by the Covenanters in the 17th century; Edinburgh Castle, repository of the Scottish Crown Jewels and the National War Memorial; Castle Levan on the Clyde Coast, associated with Marion Montgomery, whose cruelty toward tenants led to house arrest under Mary of Guise; and Glamis Castle, described as the childhood home of the Queen Mother. Stirling Castle receives the most detailed treatment, covering its role in the Wars of Independence, Wallace's victory at Stirling Bridge, and the Battle of Bannockburn.
Additional properties include Fort George near Inverness, built at a cost exceeding Scotland's gross annual product after the 1745 Jacobite uprising; Killochan Castle on the Ayrshire coast, converted by Robert Adam into a Georgian stately home; Kinloch Castle on the Hebridean island of Rum, preserved as an untouched Edwardian interior; and Craigievar Castle, passing to Chancellor Alexander Seton in 1596.
