About
Basic Witchcraft is an instructional VHS program running approximately one hour, produced as part of the Ancient Art Series from the Video Group. The content is the same program as the 1989 version in this collection, covering the history, philosophy, and ritual practice of witchcraft as a system of active magic. The closing segment promotes the companion title Reading Chinese Horoscopes in the Ancient Art Series.
The program opens with Beltane ritual footage and the Legend of the Watchers, then distinguishes the active practice of ritual magic from New Age-adjacent wellness practices. Instruction covers ritual magic's four phases, the cleansing and empowering preparation process, ritualistic breathing, the use of a personal visualization as a focus indicator, selecting a coven stead or individual practice space, and the mechanics of posture and breath during the standing preparation exercise. A mid-program ritual sequence consecrates the directional points of South and West, with spoken dedications and placement of a cup and a knife as elemental objects.
