About
An instructional video covering advanced Shotokan karate kata. The program opens with an extended discussion of principles for learning and practicing advanced kata, emphasizing the importance of understanding the practical application behind each technique, maintaining awareness of imaginary opponents in multiple directions, and developing correct timing, breathing, and hip-driven balance throughout each sequence.
Three kata are covered in depth: Tekki Nidan, the second in the three-kata Tekki series, performed entirely in the horse riding stance moving laterally and emphasizing close-range techniques with equal right and left development; Tekki Sandan, the third and final Tekki kata, characterized by rapid technique transitions and powerful blocking combinations; and Gankaku, described as one of the most difficult Shotokan kata, named Crane Standing on a Rock for its emphasis on single-leg balance, and notable for its abundance of augmented blocking techniques. Each kata is presented in full performance followed by a detailed move-by-move breakdown with technical corrections on commonly misexecuted transitions. A fourth kata, Jitte, is also covered in move-by-move breakdown form.
