About

This tape captures commercial breaks from the Buffalo and Western New York market in spring and summer 1996, recorded primarily through MTV and Nickelodeon with substantial local Buffalo advertising woven throughout.

The date range is established by multiple converging entertainment anchors. Nickelodeon's 9th Annual Kids Choice Awards is promoted as airing "this Saturday at 8/7 Central," hosted by Whitney Houston, which matches the confirmed May 11, 1996 broadcast date. The Singled Out marathon airs a Mother's Day edition "Sunday at two," placing that segment around May 12, 1996. Heaven's Prisoners with Alec Baldwin and Teri Hatcher opens "Friday May 17th." Flipper with Paul Hogan and Elijah Wood opens the same Friday, May 17. Spy Hard with Leslie Nielsen opens "Friday May 24th," which is its confirmed 1996 release. The 1996 MTV Movie Awards are promoted as airing June 13th, with voting open for best comedic performance, listing nominees drawn entirely from 1995 films: Tommy Boy, Friday, Happy Gilmore, Clueless, and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. A Dance Mix USA Volume 4 infomercial, Motorola pager ads, Rollerblade ABT brake spots, and an early AOL web browser campaign all fit the mid-1996 commercial landscape. The Living in the '90s and Super 70s music collection infomercials, both sold via 800 numbers and unavailable in stores, are consistent with this window.

Buffalo local advertisers confirm the market. Decades Rock Shop at 831 Abbott Road in South Buffalo runs multiple spots. The Age of Angels Shop at 343 Somerville Road, just west of the Boulevard Mall, appears with a full address read. WIBB TV identifies itself as broadcasting for Buffalo. The NY State domestic violence hotline is attributed to the New York State Bar Association. Channel 4 promotes a Leukemia Society telethon on September 18th, fronted by Bills player Mark Kelso, and the Neon Armadillo country music show's special preview is set for Friday September 17th at 8 on Channel 4, with regular weekly episodes to follow. These fall promos are either running several months in advance or represent a second, later recording session on the same tape.

MTV programming throughout includes The Grind running weekdays at four, Beavis and Butt-Head segments, and a Nick at Nite and TV Land launch promo. The Nick at Nite/TV Land promo marks the period when that network rebranded and expanded its classic TV programming.

The tape is unedited and preserves Buffalo market commercial breaks from spring-summer 1996, with cable programming dominant and local Buffalo advertisers woven throughout.
