About
This tape preserves commercial breaks from two geographically and chronologically distinct recording sessions: a spring 1990 session from the Baltimore, Maryland market on CBS, and a spring 1999–2000 session from the Green Bay, Wisconsin market on Fox 11.
The Baltimore CBS session is anchored by several precisely dated events. The Miss USA 1990 pageant is promoted as airing "Friday March 2nd on CBS," and Joe Versus the Volcano with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan "starts Friday March 9th," its confirmed opening date. A 1990 Census public service announcement confirms the calendar year. CBS programming includes The Wizard of Oz sponsored by McDonald's and Campbell's Soup, and a coming Monday slot for a new CBS morning anchor. Local Baltimore advertisers and news services are woven throughout, with WBAL-TV reporter Vince Bagley appearing in a segment for the Enoch Pratt Library soliciting items from the Negro Baseball Leagues for a Maryland history exhibit. News 11 teases several local stories, including a Maryland police department arson investigation and a Baltimore City and County garbage enforcement story. WJZ is referenced for a weekday morning slot. The AT&T Reach Out America long distance plan is promoted around 5 p.m. daily savings, and Roy Rogers runs a campaign claiming taste superiority over Kentucky Fried Chicken. Disney MGM Studios is promoted as a new theme park, having opened May 1, 1989.
The Green Bay Fox 11 session draws from 1999 and 2000. Family Guy airs with a "Happy Mother's Day" tagline and a season finale teaser sending the Simpsons to Japan, consistent with Fox's Mother's Day weekend 1999 programming. Comedy Central promotes a premiere week anchored by Win Ben Stein's Money "starting June 22nd," which is the confirmed launch date of that series. Futurama appears in Fox Tuesday promos. A later portion of this session contains That '70s Show and a new series called Titus on Fox Monday, with Romeo Must Die opening "tomorrow," pointing to March 21–22, 2000. Fox 11's Green Bay identity is made explicit through references to Northeast Wisconsin news, the Oneida Tribal Chairwoman, and Packerland Ford dealerships.
The tape is unedited and preserves commercial breaks from two different markets and three distinct time windows, spanning spring 1990 through early 2000.
