About
This tape captures commercial breaks from the Las Vegas, Nevada market across two primary recording sessions: the fall of 1998 (October through early November) and the spring of 1999 (May through June), with a short Disney Channel segment from December 1993 also preserved on the tape.
The fall 1998 session is anchored by multiple converging events. Fox Family News Now reports that John Glenn is "getting down to business in space," consistent with his STS-95 shuttle mission running October 29 through November 7, 1998. The same news segment covers an anthrax letter scare at an Indianapolis Parenthood Clinic and Tommy Lee Jones being hospitalized after a polo field horse accident, both October 1998 incidents. Political ads run for Kenny Gwinn in the Nevada gubernatorial race and Aaron Kenny for Clark County Commission District F, both consistent with the November 1998 election cycle. The Waterboy is promoted as opening "Friday November 6th" and Disney's I'll Be Home for Christmas "starts Friday November 13," placing these ads in late October or early November. Halloween programming on Fox Family, including a 13 Days of Halloween marathon and an Addams Family Scarathon, confirms the fall timing. The Cadillac Escalade is introduced as newly born, consistent with its fall 1998 market debut.
The spring 1999 session is pinned by Futurama airing at 8:30/7:30 Central on Fox Tuesday (it premiered March 28, 1999), with AMPM's hotspot game ending May 31st. Notting Hill is promoted for a "sneak preview Saturday night" ahead of its May 28 wide release. A Midsummer Night's Dream opens "Friday May 14th," Instinct opens "Friday June 4th," and Independence Day airs as a Fox "network premiere Sunday May 23rd."
The Las Vegas market identity is consistent across both sessions. KVVU Fox 5 is identified explicitly, with anchor Angelica Urquijo delivering Fox 5 News at 10. X 1075 Extreme Radio promotes itself as Las Vegas's only alternative station. The Employers Insurance Company of Nevada runs eCare ads targeted at Nevada businesses. Beanie Mania events take place at Arizona Charlie's on Decatur just off Highway 95. B 104 FM features Jim Palmer in a voiceover campaign.
A separate Disney Channel segment advertising the Vail Winter Wonderland Sweepstakes, with entries required by December 31, 1993, represents a distinct third recording session on the same tape.
The tape is unedited and preserves Las Vegas market commercial breaks across multiple recording sessions spanning 1993 through 1999.
