About
"I loved it" "Last of a kind" "No Wonder Rome took so long to Fall" "Gosh this is silly" "The definition of a bloated epic" (IMDB reviews quotes).
A lavishly produced flawed epic with a misleading title. It is set in the years preceding and and immediately following the death of Marcus Aurelius in 180CE. However the Western Roman Empire didn't fall until 475CE. So ignore the muddled screenplay, pop some popcorn and enjoy the spectacle which is truly amazing. Released in 1964. IMDB rating 6.7.
TRIVIA: The hugely expensive production followed by its box office flop insured it would be the last Roman sword and sandal epic until the release of "Gladiator" in 2000.
