KEEPINTIME : Talking Drums and Whispering Vinyl
featuring:
Roy Porter - played drums on "A Night in Tunisia" with Charlie Parker. He led a bebop big band and first recorded Eric Dolphy. In the late sixties he recorded several albums that are considered rare groove classics. He died a year before we found funding. This film is dedicated to him.
Earl Palmer - Given a drum set, Earl turned his tap skills into drum skills. By 1947 he was considered "the hottest cat on tubs" in his native New Orleans. After recording early hits with Bo Diddley and Little Richard he moved to Los Angeles, where he became a dominant force in the newly integrated studios. Earl is the most recorded drummer of all time. He is revered by hiphop heads as one of the drummers that fueled David Axelrod's productions to the rest of the world. He is the father of rock 'n' roll drumming.
Paul Humphrey - Grew up in Detroit. In the early 1960s, he came to Los Angeles with Wes Montgomery and never left. He has played with everyone from Burt Bacharach to Frank Zappa to John Coltrane to Steely Dan. He is the drummer on Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get it On". He has profoundly impacted hip hop through his work with Monk Higgins and Afrique, as well as his solo work and the legendary "Root Down" session with Jimmy Smith.
James Gadson - is the youngest of our drummers. He came to Los Angeles from Kansas City in the late 1960's. His hallmark work with Dyke and the Blazers, Charlie Wright and Bill Withers still fills dancefloors worldwide. Hip hop is littered with monuments to his timing.
Earl, Paul and James have never been in the same room together. On Saturday 15th January 2000, we brought them together to talk about old times, to listen to how their work has influenced the hip hop generation and to play if they so desired. LA's kings of the beats were to meet LA's kings of beat juggling.
Babu - is a member of the Beat Junkies and the obelisk dropper of Dilated Peoples
J Rocc - is a member of the Beat Junkies an amateur videographer and professional vinyl toucher
Cut Chemist - hangs out at 7 Eleven and cuts records for Jurassic 5
