GENTLE HIGHWAY
The waterways of England played a quiet, but not unnoticed, part in the national war effort between 1939 and 1945. A cinema short "Barging Along" (1944) was commissioned by the North West Regional Canal committee to demonstrate the waterway's contribution, and the efforts of men and women who worked on them. The fascinating portrayl of canal history is in contrast to "Gentle Highway" (1970), made at the end of the commercial canal carrying era. Evocative scenes of pleasure boating capture the magic of the waterways, while a sequence of commercial craft using the famous Anderton Boat lift shows waterways engineering at its most dramatic. A "Civilized Adventure" (1985) is an American view of the waterways of Britain. A brief history of waterways, recollections of commercial carrying, pleasure craft on the waterways of today are featured.
