About
Planes crash. Buildings burn. Ships sink. But you don't have to. See how technology can save your life. Accidents happen every day, but thanks to technology's ever-increasing sophistication, fewer accidents than ever result in the loss of life. In this four-part series, NOVA goes behind the sensational headlines to examine the science of "survival engineering." Through film footage, historic archival photos, expert interviews and landmark events, discover how past disasters help prevent today's tragedies.
Episode one - Fire: Fire allows the viewer to witness the remarkable story behind such ingenious inventions as the automatic sprinkler, explore man's historic efforts to stay safe from fire and discover the most effective fire survival tactic: prevention.
Episode two - Car Crash: Evolution of auto design and safety from the Model T to design measures still being developed.
Episode three - Plane Crash: This episode examines how deadly catastrophes led to much-needed design changes on commercial jetliners, what makes the cabin of many modern commercial planes potentially lethal, and looks at how military jet pilots survive ejection at 500 miles per hour.
Episode four - Abandon Ship: In this NOVA documentary the viewer learns about the evolution of marine safety.
