About

John Ford's 'They Were Expendable' is one of his greatest films and one of the finest films ever made about men and war. The screenplay by Ford's frequent collaborator Frank Wead, came from an early 1940s best-seller, by William L. White, about the men of the PT boats shortly before and after the attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbour. The place is the Philippines, where the PT boards, despite the efforts of Lieutenant John Brickley and Lieutenant Rusty Ryan, are still regarded as nothing more than pleasure craft and message carriers. The men get the chance to prove the worth of their PT boats when the Japanese invade the Philippines.

'They Were Expendable' is a powerful, enthralling movie, and as far as I am concerned, essential viewing for all true movie lovers.
