About

Possessed is fascinating - not the least reason for this being the off-screen relationship of the two leading players, Joan Crawford and Clark Gable, which suffuses their on-screen relationship with intriguing naturalness and and emotional power. Directed by Clarence Brown at MGM in 1931, Possessed features Joan Crawford, already a major star, as Marian, a factory worker from Pennsylvania who has a glimpse of the high life and goes to New York to find such a life for herself. Marian is a quick learner and it is not long before she becomes the mistress of a rich, prominent lawyer, Mark Whitney, played by Clark Gable who, in 1931, was on the verge of the top stardom that was his for nearly thirty years to come. Possessed is a trenchant, arresting drama with a strong screenplay by Lenore Coffee and a visual appeal due not a little to the fine camerawork of Oliver T. Marsh. Clarence Brown takes us with stylish economy from the downbeat life of an American small town to the penthouse luxury of the big city where Marian must make some crucial decisions to ensure her future happiness after gaining power, status and the trappings of the rich life.

You'll love Joan Crawford and Clark Gable together in Possessed. The cast includes Skeets Gallagher, Wallace Ford, Frank Conroy, John Miljan and Clara Blandick. Joan also sings - the poignantly titled "How Long Can It Last?" written by Max Leif and Joseph Meyer.
