About

Made by an obscure company called Trading Corporation in 1936 and directed by John C. Elder, POLAND presents images of that nation prior to WWII and the Nazi occupation. Elder, born in 1902, was a prolific British director who worked in the 1960s. The film presents terrific images including a cable railway at the 1:30 mark, a sheep farm and peasant life at 3:00, the Vistula River and the bridges over it leading to Warsaw. The capitol is seen at the 5 minute mark, including rare images of the city's Jewish population at the 5:24 mark, noted as "one of the problems of new Poland" due to their segregation from society. Some of Warsaw's Jewish neighborhood is seen at the 6:00 mark. The port of Gdynia is shown at 7:27, built out of necessity following WWI.
