Durante la digestione, i residui fibrosi degli alimenti passano attraverso l'intestino crasso. Se il transito intestinale è rallentato, i residui ristagnano e si seccano a contatto prolungato con la membrana del colon. Le feci diventano più dure quando raggiungono il retto.
