About
Graphite is the stable allotropic modification of carbon. To enable its burning in an atmosphere of nitrogen(I) oxide, it is necessary to heat it to red hot. After the heated piece of graphite is placed into the chamber filled with N2O, it is observed that the graphite continues to glow, unlike the result in air. The reaction that takes place is relatively slow because it occurs only on the surface of the graphite. The products of the dominant reaction are: N2O(g) + С(ѕ) = CO(g) + N2(g)
The carbon monoxide does not react with water and as a result, the pH of the solution does not change. That is the reason why there is no change in the color of the phenolphthalein solution.
The experiment was performed by Prof. PhD Miha Bukleski. The planning of the experiment also included the Prof. Emeritus PhD Vladimir Petruševski, Prof. PhD Marina Stojanovska and the student Mihail Trajkov, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
