The Root of All Evil is a 1999 audio drama produced by BBV Productions and written by Lance Parkin. Set on an isolated hill farm in Yorkshire, the story begins with the discovery of a strange and aggressive species of plant growing among the crops. Between the stalks of wheat and along the ancient hedgerows, something unnatural is spreading through the soil, silently choking the life out of the surrounding land.
More about it
Eve Black, a young biologist working for the Ministry of Agriculture, and her partner Martin are sent to the farm to investigate what initially appears to be an unusual case of weed infestation. As they study the strange growth, however, it soon becomes clear that this is no ordinary plant. What lies beneath the soil is a sentient and hostile alien organism capable of spreading rapidly and consuming all other forms of life. What begins as a routine scientific enquiry gradually turns into a race to understand, and hopefully contain, an expanding biological threat before it spreads beyond the isolated farm.
At the centre of the story are the Krynoids, a dangerous extra-terrestrial plant life form originally introduced in the television serial The Seeds of Doom. Compared with many of the more famous creatures associated with Doctor Who, the Krynoids are relatively lesser-known. They are depicted here as parasitic organisms capable of rapidly spreading across their environment, consuming and transforming the landscape as they grow.

Radio drama, old-time radio and historic broadcasts from the Internet Archive (its Old Time Radio collection with the Old Time Radio Researchers' sets, WWII Era Audio Recordings, the Pacifica Radio Archives, the Radio Haiti Archive, German radio plays and listeners' uploads), Wikimedia Commons (with the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision's broadcasts) and the Library of Congress. Every episode plays from its archive, which this site does not copy; rights are as each archive states them. Nothing here is called public domain on this site's say-so. In the United States, sound recordings first fixed before 15 February 1972 have federal protection under the Music Modernization Act of 2018, for most until 2067 at the latest, so most American radio of the 1930s to the 1950s is not in the public domain there. Each set shows the licence, mark or statement its archive gives, and says whose it is. Horror, crime, war and westerns are for teenage and adult profiles, racist caricature for adults only, and children’s profiles hear what was made for children. More about these archives.
