DESCRIPTION: 56 Prozent aller Nordiren stimmten im Juni 2016 für einen Verbleib in der EU. Trotzdem wird bei ihnen bald eine neue Außengrenze der EU verlaufen. Dabei war es in Nordirland gerade erst gelungen, eine Grenze zu überwinden, die der geschundenen Provinz in einem blutigen Bürgerkrieg bis 1998 fast 4.000 Tote beschert hatte.

Seit dem Beginn des Friedensprozesses wurde hier nicht nur gegenseitiges Misstrauen zwischen der britisch-treuen und der irischstämmigen Bevölkerung abgebaut. Das Ende der Unruhen führte gleichzeitig zu einer wirtschaftlichen Blüte. Seit dem britischen Votum für den Brexit ist nun alles anders. Was endlich überwunden schien, steht plötzlich wieder auf dem Prüfstand. Nach dem Patt beider Lager bei den letzten Wahlen im März und dem Referendumwunsch der Schotten wurden auch in Nordirland Stimmen laut, die endlich eine Abkehr von Großbritannien fordern. Doch das Wahldebakel der Torys im Juni machte die erzkonservative DUP zum Mehrheitsbeschaffer in London, der nun neue Forderungen für Nordirland stellen möchte.
