Hancock's Half Hour : LP re-makes

More about it

Spoken word comedy. 1960s re-recordings (audio only) of episodes from the 1950s television series starring Tony Hancock, produced by Pye Records for LP release on vinyl disc.

In most cases the LP recording uses the original television cast, who do their best to re-create the television episode in sound-only (subject to minor script changes to cater for the lack of pictures).

This was fairly easy to achieve. Hancock had begun as a radio comedian: his comedy was predominantly based on telling jokes, rather than on the use of sight-gags (which had no place on radio). Hence his tv show, written by his original radio scriptwriters, tended to use scripts that were really radio scripts, i.e. in which nearly all the comedy came from the dialogue.

These LPs were commercial discs sold to the general public. This was a merchandising spin-off resulting from the popularity of the television series.

Includes the two most famous television scripts: The Blood Donor and The Radio Ham.

So here is The Blood Donor, complete with Hancock's most famous catchphrase. Asked to give blood, he objects on the grounds that the doctor is taking too much, and fears he'll be left with an empty limb:

• A pint? That's very nearly an armful!

Every episode plays from its archive, which this site does not copy; rights are as each archive states them. Nothing here is called public domain on this site's say-so. In the United States, sound recordings first fixed before 15 February 1972 have federal protection under the Music Modernization Act of 2018, for most until 2067 at the latest, so most American radio of the 1930s to the 1950s is not in the public domain there. Each set shows the licence, mark or statement its archive gives, and says whose it is. Horror, crime, war and westerns are for teenage and adult profiles, racist caricature for adults only, and children’s profiles hear what was made for children. More about these archives.
