DESCRIPTION: Im gottesfürchtigen Marshall in North Carolina soll der 13-jährige Chriss bei einer Messe von seiner Stummheit 'geheilt' werden. Über seinen plötzlichen Tod schweigt der charismatische Prediger der Gemeinde. Doch sein Bruder hat beobachtet, was an dem Tag in der Kirche geschah.

In Marshall, einem abgeschiedenen Ort in den Bergen North Carolinas, geschieht an einem heißen Sommertag das Unfassbare. Der dreizehnjährige Christopher Hall kommt während der Abendmesse ums Leben. Der Junge hat noch nie ein Wort gesprochen. Deshalb sollte er an diesem Sonntag in der Kirche 'geheilt' werden. Niemand aus der Gemeinde will sich zum Tod des Jungen äußern. Auch der charismatische Prediger Carson Chambliss, der selbsternannte Erlöser im Ort, schweigt zu dem Vorfall. Was jedoch keiner in Marshall ahnt: Christophers jüngerer Bruder Jess hat das Geschehen in der Kirche an dem Tag, als sein Bruder starb, von außen beobachtet. Und Jess weiß, was er gesehen hat. Er weiß auch, was Christopher und er nur wenige Tage zuvor in ihrem Elternhaus gesehen haben.
