Willkommen in Three Gabels, dem krummen Haus mit den vielen Giebeln. Hier wohnen drei Generationen der Familie Leonides unter einem Dach, allesamt finanziell unabhängig dank der großzügigen Geschenke des Patriarchen, des wohlhabenden Geschäftsmannes Aristide Leonides. Aus Griechenland stammend, hat er in England mit Restaurants, Nachtclubs und so manchem juristischen Schlupfloch ein Vermögen gemacht. Eines Tages ist der 87-Jährige tot. Vergiftet durch seine eigenen medizinischen Tropfen. Ein Versehen – oder arglistiger Mord? Aristides geliebte Enkelin Sophia weigert sich, ihren Verlobten Charles Hayward zu ehelichen, solange diese Frage nicht geklärt ist. Schließlich wolle Charles doch nicht in eine Familie voller Verdächtiger einheiraten. Über gewundene Treppen und weit verzweigte Korridore arbeitet sich Charles durch die Familiengeheimnisse. Hinter jeder Tür wohnt jemand, der den alten Tyrannen ins Jenseits befördert haben könnte. Von Aristides blutjunger zweiter Ehefrau Brenda bis zur Nanny hatten alle ein Motiv – nur fehlt es an Beweisen.
