Backstage Wife is one of the longest-running and most beloved daytime dramas from radio’s Golden Age. Created by the prolific husband-and-wife production team of Frank and Anne Hummert, the series aired from August 5, 1935, through January 2, 1959, across the Mutual, NBC, and CBS radio networks.

More about it

The story follows Mary Noble, a sincere small-town woman from Iowa who marries Larry Noble, a handsome and celebrated Broadway matinee idol. Mary soon discovers that life behind the theater curtain is filled with far more than bright lights and applause.

As the wife of a man admired by millions of women, Mary must navigate the glamorous but turbulent world of New York theater. Her marriage is repeatedly tested by ambitious actresses, scheming socialites, romantic rivals, professional jealousy, deception, and the pressures of Larry’s public life. Through it all, Mary’s loyalty, humility, and devotion remain at the emotional heart of the series.

Broadcast in 15-minute weekday installments, Backstage Wife captivated generations of listeners with its continuing storylines, memorable characters, romantic complications, and dramatic cliffhangers. Its remarkable run of more than 23 years helped establish it as an important part of American radio history.

Every episode plays from its archive, which this site does not copy; rights are as each archive states them. Nothing here is called public domain on this site's say-so. In the United States, sound recordings first fixed before 15 February 1972 have federal protection under the Music Modernization Act of 2018, for most until 2067 at the latest, so most American radio of the 1930s to the 1950s is not in the public domain there. Each set shows the licence, mark or statement its archive gives, and says whose it is. Horror, crime, war and westerns are for teenage and adult profiles, racist caricature for adults only, and children’s profiles hear what was made for children. More about these archives.
