More about it

“The Happy Gang" ran on Melbourne's Own 3DB from 1953 till 1962. It owed its origin to the earlier 3DB test cricket broadcasts with a bright atmosphere of fun and frolics. The first resident comedians were Dick Cranbourne and John Stuart and later Bill Collins and Jack Perry. Regulars on the program included Eula and Marie Parker, June Hamilton, Shirlene Clancy, Rod McLennan, Lou Toppano, Tom Davidson, Stan Stafford , Don Kinsey and many others.

Norman Spencer was the shows first producer and he later went on to bigger and better things in television and GTV9 in 1956. His work with Graham Kennedy is legendary in the history of Melbourne TV. After Spencer, Alf Spargo took over the production of the show as well as scripting it. He was followed by Mike Dyer and finally Peter Surrey.

These recordings have been acquired from publicly available sources on the Internet, and my goal has been to put together a collection of every available episode where possible. I will add to these collections if I discover new episodes or if any new episodes become available. Additionally, while I tried to put together a collection that contains the best version of each episode that I could, there may be better copies of some recordings available from collectors and dealers, and I encourage you to reach out to them if you are so inclined. If they are not in the public…

Radio drama, old-time radio and historic broadcasts from the Internet Archive (its Old Time Radio collection with the Old Time Radio Researchers' sets, WWII Era Audio Recordings, the Pacifica Radio Archives, the Radio Haiti Archive, German radio plays and listeners' uploads), Wikimedia Commons (with the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision's broadcasts) and the Library of Congress. Every episode plays from its archive, which this site does not copy; rights are as each archive states them. Nothing here is called public domain on this site's say-so. In the United States, sound recordings first fixed before 15 February 1972 have federal protection under the Music Modernization Act of 2018, for most until 2067 at the latest, so most American radio of the 1930s to the 1950s is not in the public domain there. Each set shows the licence, mark or statement its archive gives, and says whose it is. Horror, crime, war and westerns are for teenage and adult profiles, racist caricature for adults only, and children’s profiles hear what was made for children. More about these archives.
