More about it

Fair Dinkum Variety

“John West" (7 March 1924 – 9 July 2008) was an Australian broadcaster and theatre historian remembered for his long-running programmes "Sentimental Journey" and "The Showman" broadcast nationally on ABC Radio. He joined the ABC as an announcer in 1942 before enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force, serving with RAAF Radio "The Voice of the Islands" from 1942 to 1945. He returned to the ABC as an ordinary announcer, pursuing his theatrical interests at every opportunity in his off-duty time until 1964 when he was able to combine his profession and passion in the weekly programme "The Showman" (1964-1990). A second program, "Sentimental Journey" (1978-1995) in which he resurrected old gramophone records from the ABC's record library, as well as his own and those of fellow enthusiasts, followed in 1978. Both continued after he "officially" retired in 1989. This great series on Australian Variety aired in the 1960's.

These recordings have been acquired from publicly available sources on the Internet, and my goal has been to put together a collection of every available episode where possible. Radio drama, old-time radio and historic broadcasts from the Internet Archive (its Old Time Radio collection with the Old Time Radio Researchers' sets, WWII Era Audio Recordings, the Pacifica Radio Archives, the Radio Haiti Archive, German radio plays and listeners' uploads), Wikimedia Commons (with the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision's broadcasts) and the Library of Congress. Every episode plays from its archive, which this site does not copy; rights are as each archive states them. Nothing here is called public domain on this site's say-so. In the United States, sound recordings first fixed before 15 February 1972 have federal protection under the Music Modernization Act of 2018, for most until 2067 at the latest, so most American radio of the 1930s to the 1950s is not in the public domain there. Each set shows the licence, mark or statement its archive gives, and says whose it is. Horror, crime, war and westerns are for teenage and adult profiles, racist caricature for adults only, and children’s profiles hear what was made for children. More about these archives.
