"The Antique Phonograph Music Program"

More about it

Original transmission date: 05/20 2014

(Guest Ron Hutchinson of the Vitaphone Project)

Another chance to hear WFMU's "The Antique Phonograph Program" with host Mac & his special in-studio guest fellow record-collector Ron Hutchinson, founder of The Vitaphone Project.

"The Antique Phonograph Music Program" format is unique in that 78 RPM records are usually played on antique acoustic "steel-needle" phonographs directly "over-the-air", giving the listener the authentic audiological antique sound of the period record players from the early 20th Century. Mac has infectious zeal & energy for the music of the era.

For this 2014 episode, Guest Ron Hutchinson explains how The Vitaphone Project was founded & it's aims at restoring 16-inch records of lost vintage soundtracks with their visual 1920s film elements.

Ron also shares some favorites from his collection & a couple of Vitaphone tracks that are all electrically transferred... In other words, no steel needles (or acoustic machines) were used in the playing of these gems & the listener experience can benefit from the full range of sound that the early "orthophonic" fidelity can offer.

Every episode plays from its archive, which this site does not copy; rights are as each archive states them. Nothing here is called public domain on this site's say-so. In the United States, sound recordings first fixed before 15 February 1972 have federal protection under the Music Modernization Act of 2018, for most until 2067 at the latest, so most American radio of the 1930s to the 1950s is not in the public domain there. Each set shows the licence, mark or statement its archive gives, and says whose it is. Horror, crime, war and westerns are for teenage and adult profiles, racist caricature for adults only, and children’s profiles hear what was made for children. More about these archives.
