Eight persons were willed, seven more were fatally injured and a dozen others were severely hurt in the wreck of Iron Mountain train No. 18. laden with passenger coming to St. Louis ta attend the open ng of the World's fair, at Wickes Station, milet north of here at 8:30 o'clock this morning. Derailment was caused by an one.- switch. The entire train left the track, w th the exception of the last sleeper. In the wreckage that piled high in the gully bes de the track were an engine, a smoker, a baggage car and four sleepers. The fifth smoker which made up the through section oF the train, was kept from the mass of splintered coaches by the breaking cf a coupler. The greatest loss of life occurred in the smoker, where a number jf passengers had congregated. Engineer Bailey stuck to his post and was sca'ded to death, his right hand clutching the shut-off. his body has not yet been recovo-ed from the wreck. The cars were piled in a high heap, but d-d not take fire. Owing to the isolation of the spo; at which the wreck occurred, the work of rescue was greatly delayed. It was necessary to flag No. 9 at De Soto, 20 miles south of Kimms wick, to put a relief party aboard. Eery physician who remained in toe city after the fair excursion had left earlier in the morning, at once vol unteered his 3erv ccs. i This party, despite every attempt at haste, did net arrive on the scene urtil mere than an hour after the cara had buried the passengers beneath them. When they arrived at the switch they found that a few of the injured nad been removed to Kimmswick. The indirect cause of the wreck I was the break down last night of a journal on a froiifht car of a fast fr'leh' train f;n th" main lino bi tWMfl two -witches of Wickes sldint It was necessary to leave it on th track, the freight proceeding soutt ward. All trains had to take the si' tug at Wickes, as the main line wa Moelbtd. Five trains passed the ol struetlon between the time the ca was abandoned and th arrival of N I.
