HANGING ON “Uncle Sam” Stille I haint much on braggin about things. But I want to tell you I think I have the best maw that ever lived in this here Holler. Dont think I have ever heard her lift her voice in all the years I have known her—and I have known her fer some time. YeS, there has been a heap of things to cause her to get her dander up, fer she raised nine kids of her own and fourteen others what was not her own. They was orphans and skally wags who had no one to look after them. Now, you got a job on your hands when you raise twenty three children and live with the same man all your life. Maw is as patient as a century plant and she has a sixth sense or somethin that gives her a heap of wisdom. When I bought this here farm and went in debt fer it, she stood by me like a piller. I remember one year we had a bad spring flood that washed my crops away. Well, I planted them again and we was hit by the worst drouth in the history cf the Holler and it burned up my crops. I couldent pay my interest on the morgage, let alone any principle. I was ready to throw down all my tools and let the bank have the farm. WTien I told maw how I felt, she ktnda choked up and couldnt say jnuch, but she choked out some words I haint never forgot. She said, “He fails who drops the tools of life, he wins who picks them up. Well. I picked them up and I haint ihever dropped them and I haint goin to either till my time comes. Lower Salem,Ohio Yews for hsrtgin on whether or no.
