'1 m- ,-ft J' M: it .r 4, A THE VOLUME a. NUMBER I5. Money TO Loan ON IMPROVED LANDS IN Ward County S ALSO LOAN MONEY TO MAKE FINAL PROOFS Jourgen Olson Minot, N. D. SUIT AGAINST SCHOOL BOARD J. M. Vatsvog, A Resident of The Deep River School District, Brlais Actio* A* 4Mt Tneafeers of The OM School Board. The members of the former school board of the Deep River school district, were in this city Friday and Saturday getting legal advice pertaining to a suit which has been started against them by J. M. Vatsvog, a resident of that district. He charges the board with squandering the taxpayers' money in buying books. The suit is started against B. E. Corey, David Hamilton, C. H. Soimner, Ed. Johnson and J. I*. Ebersole. Those men have retained a lawyer and will fight the case. ()ne of the members of the oil l»oard was seeii by an Indepen dent representative and he stilted that they had not purchased any books from the company but had wittertHl into an agreement with them to use the books and next March a settlement would be made, the board to pay for as many us they decided to keep. No money had been faid over. Reports Badly Colored C. H. Soinmer, the clerk of the Dtep River district, visited this offiice Saturday and informed us that the article published in the last week's Independent regarding tie resignation of the school board of that district wan false in many jwrticulars aud as this paper re ceived its information from an un reliable source, we gladly make the -corrections. There are at present twenty-five schools in that district instead of nineteen as our informant told us, and there are preparations made for two others while three petitions for school were laid over until the next meetings. There have lieen no books paid for, but the book company sent out a consignment of books which -were to IK? distributed among the schools and all that were not need ed were to be returned. An Hour With The Teachers A representative of the Inde pendent spent some time Friday at the summer school. Although the -weather was excessively warm, the teachers were giving the in structors-their closest attention. This is counted by everyone, the very best summer school ever held 111 the state. The teachers are all bright and well educated and are willing to go to a little trouble to keep up with the times. Conductor Hoover held the un divided attention of sixty hnchers while he explained souae excellent ]xinte in arithmetic. The teachers attending froui the three counties. Pierce, McHenry and Ward, num ber 177. Some returned to their schools at the end of the week, aud the attendance is somewhat smaller. Ward county had 85 teachers, Pierce, 30 and McHejjry T)9. May Have Hydrophobia. Richard Wvnkop of Bottineau believes that he has been at tacked by hydrophobia and left for Chicago for treatment, A mud dog bit his mare and the animal hud to be killed. The colt \vn* kept and the owner's haiidn and arms began to swell, lie is alarmed. The Prido of Minot is the popular flour. It leads. 15 i\ Money Would Bunco The Farmers Potatoes promise to l)e a very scarce article in the valley this fall owing to the lack of rainfall during the early growth of the plants. Numerous potato buy ers are visiting the farmers in this part of the state trying to purchase the potatoes as they staud in the field tit 2" cents [er bushel and in some districts they work their scheme very succes fullv. The idea is that the buy er gets the farmer's signature to a pajer selling him the crop at a certain price when they are dug then in the fall if the potatos are a good commodity tne specuhic tor appears and demands the fulfillment of the contract, where as, if the market has slumped and prices are low, the farmer is left to dispose of the crop as best lie can. Molyneux Talks Superintendent Molyneux of McHenry county was a visitor of this office Monday and states that the Deep River board of di rectors cariied things with a high handnotwithstanding those men were in this office the day previous telling their story. He fctated that the board purchased thirty libraries at $45 each issu ing warrants for the same. At the time tliere were 19 schools in tnat district. The petition actually was signed by 250 voters of that district asking for-the removal of the board. Dedicated Johnson's Barn The home of James Johnson of Burlington was the scene of an unusual amount of merriment Friday night, the occasion being a "house wsirmiug" of Jim's mammoth barn, so to speak. About 150 of the friends gath ered in Ward county's biggest barn, which is just about com pleted, and for several hours en joyed themselves playiiig games, dancing and visiting. Ice creain and cake were served. Mr. Johnson and wife have long lived at Burlington and possess scores of friends who enjoy the hospitality of their beautiful home. Jones Speaks to Teachers Rev. Kdgar Jones was listened to for nearly tin hour Sunday eveuing by a very large crowd of teachers and others. Thpjpreach er held the attention of his audi ence perfectly while he produced some mil omforieul gems. 11 is sermon was directed to the teach ers mainly. The teacher is ex jiected to riot only direct the pu pils for the betterment of them selves educationally, morally, and socially, but religiously as well. This does not mean that deuominationalism must be brought into the school. Keep this out. The teuchers received some excellent advice and con siderable encouragement and were made to realize fully that their'work is great.% Willard's T«nt Prof. Wilhml. the geologist, and hi8.tM*igtant«cuiue in from the hills 25 hi ilea southwwt, Sut ure! ay where they have been 111 aleiug iuvwtigationH. Mrs. Colton Very III Mrs. Colton, the venerable mo ther of Mr. James .Johnson of Burlington, was taken seriously ill during the progress of the party at the Johnson home Fri day night and is now in a very precarious condition. She is 68 years old and is unconscious all the time and cannot move. Her speech is effected. She was standing talking with the crowd when she was stricken with pa ralysis. Dr. Crokat is attending the lady and believes she has a chance to improve. 4 Flax About Ready To Cut C. 1). Woolvferton will begin harvesting his flax in less than a week. All of it is in the dough. "I sowed some wheat 011 O11 Lost 25 Loads of Hay H. and J. Lee are mourning the loss of twenty-five loads of fine hay which were carried with the wind over several miles of the prairie Thursday night. They had that day raked up the hay into windrows intending to take it to their barns the next day but the wind saved them the trouble of caring for it. The loss amounts to more than a hund red dollars. Lauder Here Aug. uth Judge I'alda, Sunday, received a telegram from Judge Lander stating that he would be in Mi not to open court August 12, at which time the Bic-kford-Frost superintendent case will come up. Six other cases will be tried then. »r. »AKC MINOT, WARD OQUNTY, NORTH DAKOTA, WEDNESDAY, JULY ay, 1903. Aftlcle Was Misleading In last week's Independent there was an article winch was rather misleading regarding J. Hoff. Mr. Hoff is doing every thing he can to straighten up his affairs so he may do what is right with his creditors and be lieves that within a short time he will be enabled to resume busi ness in this city. There is no one who wishes to see Mr. Hoff fail. When it is possible to collect till hia debts, he believes he will have plenty to pay all of his indebted ness mv old potato ground this year and the ground was manured besides, and my neighbors say it will go forty bushels to the acre," said Mr. Woolverton. Glenburn is destined to be a good town The rail wry company realizing this fact, ordered a .seventy foot grade to be located within the borders of the town for passing tracks. A pigger named Dutch was used rather roughly by members of the farm er's gang who are grading along the new road east of Glenburn. Tne fellow was traveling along the trail when he was stopped and several barrels of beer which proved to be empty, were chrown out, A hot fight took place at the railroad camp a few days ago. Two of the graders, a Frenchman and a Norwegian, quarreled over a iime of poker and the enchm ui .stiucK tne Scandinavian I across th nose cutting it hadlv. In giving th lick, the Fienchman's hand was broken. Both men laid off unable to work. Murphy's camp was moved a mile northwest of (Jienbvrn. The work on this grade will be comj.)leted by Kept. 1. Mr. Jlurphy expresses his opinion that the rails of the new road will not be laid this fall, but expects to see the work completed next spring. This is not up on any word which he received from the company however. The citizens of western 158 81 are quite indignant over the fact that they are asked to go to the eastern part of the township to wgrk the roads. They assert that tliey do not object to work ing the roads in their own township, or even paying the three dollars poll tax to have the work done in their own dis trict^ but they propose to show Road Overseer Pollock that they do not have to go severnl milcfc- in order to satisfy the selfish wishes of.some other over seer. Jones of the local Methodist church gave us an eloquent lecture Of the teachers lit' remembers, and why he rciut'mbeTi the m—from the Black who fairly for got himself in themes yet was inter esting at first because he graduated with Barrie and Ian Maclaren the .two men insisted on preaching "Hell lire and "airly roasted those who disagreed— Aritli hell-fire." Miss Whiteley's solo was so sweet lullaby, and her reception shows her place in the hearts of her students an abiding place it is dugout by her wi rk, so rich, so rare, so rarely useful. This school is well office re 1 with good workers whose work is well in hand. Then J. C. Callahan of Casselton, ex County Superintendent gave a talk which was good in matter, but lacked so much of his clear, crisp voice aud hi, Irish brogue, the latter he dons at wili. Later he conducted the Civil Govern ment class and there we had a treat in his Senate visit, on day of Filipino debate, and who will forget his awe, (he said.he was over awed first time in his life) in U. S. Supreme Court. The: he was at home, for he is now a bright and shining light among our county le- §al luminaries. In his respect for U. S. uprcmc Justice, he is in such good company as the late W. E. Gladstone and the present Law Lord of England, Baron Russell of Killowen. Lastly we had an eloquent plea for the dignity of the Corner, the opportun ity of the quiet littlo Rod Schoolhouse, and our compelling duty of opening our eyen to see, and hearts to lore, the little group of five which is the wverage at tendance it seems. This is the Corpor al's Guard, the Picket Post of the com ing Grand Army of the Republic, 18,000, 000 strong, of which North Dakota con tingent is no mean part. Who was the Bugler? The man affectionately called by his fellows, Joe Devine. He magnified oar work and privileges until we exclaimed, "Who is sufficient for these things?" But we thank God for the Prophet. 204 students arc enrolled in the Sum mer school. 114 have elected to attend the Civil Government class of Prof. Hoover. Why? First foremost Mr. Hoover does good work. Second, in good classes, we all study together, teacher as guide and friend, pupil as individual who stands alone as citizen. Third, North Dakota insists on having for teachers those who are good citizens and can give a reason for the faith that is within them. All must study civics. Miss Whiteley's power of working well under adverse circumstances is a marvel to those in her class. Sheer grit! Sand that shifts, but to line up somewhere else, say those who live be side the Dunes of McHenry county. Come and see Miss Fisher and Miss. Snow, our new worker- See women, self poised not nervous, but full of nerve. The thanks of the students who have now seen the X-Ray are hereby tendered to Mrs. Crokat for her courtesy and kindness. The reception held in the dressmak ing parlors of Mrs. Ode and her sister oi K-*u?*y evening has left a warm spot in the memory of the. sues take the opportunity of saying so. The students generally are very grate ful to the law officers and the newspa per dens for unfailing courtesies. Some of us have left an abiding im pression of ourselves, on Minot retinas, as permanent question marks. Minot leaves an imprint on our minds as the picturesque of poetry, pleasure, and peace of happy homes and hearts that heed Long may she flourish, and grow as now. The sale will attract an im mense crowd to Minot. Sj»ecial free train service has been provided for from Minot to, the stock yards for the sale. This is an excellent opportunity to buy some good horse fl wh. Special train will leave Minot for stock yards at 12:45 and the big horse sale will commence at 1 p. m. sharp.
