I Thta morning Charles Moorebouae, I a constable, served the papers on the husband, who waa drunk at the I time. Both Had Money. Mrs. Potharst carried hand satchel In which was 14 in cash, a few papers and several cards. la Potharst's pockets the deputy cor oner found about $16 In cash, sev eral paper* and some receipt*. His,answer to the direct question ii he would be content with hi* salary of $2,400 a year, and return to the county all money "nut actually expended fyr the board of ill. prisoners, is nothing more or le*» The question put by the Civic Union was straightforward and direct. It admitted of no heating about the bush, but re quired a "yes" or .1 "no" in reply. The reply of Hob I!odfjc was an emphatic "ye», M while that of Williams was an insult to the intelligence of the members of the Civic Union and to thy illy, Mr. Williams virtually says in his letter that he will take whatever money the county'commissioner* may give him t»> feed the prisoners, and whatever he can save out of this lie will keep. To have said this without any equivocation would en title him to In respect of the public, if nut their confidence. A man who is above board is admired, even if his stand U not approved. It a clear that Mr. Williams hat no intention of feeding the county prisoners at cost. If he had, he^ would not The taxpayers of King county will no longer tolerate the graft." That much is certain. To take 40 cent* a day from the county to feed a prisoner and then give him 10 cents' worth of food, comes pretty close to that form of human activity commonly designated as petty larceny. If the salary $200 a month is not enough for Mr Williams' time, certain ly he is too high-priced a nan for the citizens of King county to employ. His earning power may be more than this, and from his financial success in life it appears that it is, but the qualifications of the office of sheriff are not &o rarely distrib uted that King county can allot to pay a double salary fur Mr. Williams' services. Mr."Williams has told the voters: "If you want my serv ices, you will have to pay me the regular -a!.uy and all i can make on the side." Does King county want him?
