The cap tain, ground between the laws of navigation and the rulei of If company, loses his month's pay, and the dignity of the eral government is handsomely upheld. "Probably a rule something like this will be in effect a couple of hundred year* from now. Tucket! away in a perfunctory notice-in a recent issue of I The Star was the statement of the manager of a local theatre that a much-advertised Salome dance had been taken from the lull It wasn't very good ant! it wasn't very had, and gener* ally the patrons of the play house didn't appear to care for it Rather astonishing that, for the pessimist on matters moral, and of some significance generally, showing, as it does, that there is a line of decency drawn by theatre-goers across which it i* not safe for managers to travel. ,',y'As a judge of the wishes of the public there i* no criterion which can be relict! upon so certainly as th. box office of a theatre. True, its judgment is based on the crude commercial arguments of dollars and cents, and it makes no fine ethical or moral distinctions, but for facts it stands in a class by itself. The Salome dance, in the day* of the sanguinary dancer, may perhaps have had some artistic merit. Given a back* ground of a freshly severed head, these abdominal contortions could well be enjoyed by a person whose jaded nerves were strung abnormally taut, to appreciate the ghoulish and volup tuous commingled. Dramatic presentation, even with the incentive for the limit of Belasconian daring, has not vet reached the point where abattoir effects and decapitation* may be shown in reality or art, and with a slaughter-house setting the dance of Salome degenerates'into Little Egypt exhibition in portiere tassels, a mixture of Swedish movement and a contortionist display. That the Seattle public declines to pay to see this sort of thing-shows that it cither looks with disapproval from a moral viewpoint, or that any public indecency must have the merit at least of some refinement to brighten and soften the vulgarity. In either case, there is cause for congratulation.
