EXTRA! VOl. 10 NO. 170. RING RULE REBUKED 808 HODGE SWEEPS THE COUNTY 808 HODGE Th« jcke that maturtd Into a Jofctr —the beat cartt m ih« deck. AGNEW AND BRIER ARE AT LAST ELIMINATED County Boss and Chief Lieutenant Are Overwhelmed by Popular Uprising of Voters. fT Following arc the republican nominations for county ofiices, as far as determined: For Sheriff—ROßEßT T. HODGE. For County Clerk—D K. SICKLES. For Auditor—OTTO A. CASE. For Treasurer—GEOßGE F. RUSSELL. For Prosecuting Attorney—CEO F. VANDERVEER. For Assessor—THOMAS A. PARISH. V__ _. y Bob Hodge won. These three words epitomize the story of the most re- Earkible rebuke ever administered to a political ring in the Kit* of Washington. Bob Hodge, coal-miner deputy from Black Diamond, won tkt republican nomination for sheriff over James Agnew, I". Etk&l buss of King county and supposedly invincible politician. Not only was Agncw, the Ikjss, turned down, defeated by ■■lie man whose candidacy has been treated as a huge joke by ring, but, almost without exception, the ring candidates »r office were snowed under in the primary election yesterday. Those ringsters who won out, because they were opposed «J» multiplicity of candidates, were no less rebuked because preponderance of votes was heavily against them. The "indication" they were seeking was not forthcoming. COUNTY RING DOOMED. Throughout the county, the doom of the old county ring beini told in the returns today. IJoss Agnew is down. Brier is eliminated from politics, and lesser ringsters were other defeated or shown the hand-writing on the wall so plainly 'hat another primary is not likely to tempt them to run. The rebuke to ring rule extended to the vote on the Hum •ation for governor and the endorsement for senator. In the doting for all offices, the widespread opposition to ring rule **s demonstrated. The rebuke of Agncw was the most stinging administered. "«lge carrird Agntw'it home precinct and his home ward, the Third, which is the stronghold of the county ring. i' the First ward, where Agnevv expected to poll 1,000 plurality, the total vote fell far short of that number. For this «et the credit belongs largely to George P. Vanderveer, re- Ptiblican nominee for prosecuting attorney, who prevented the ribution of Ankeny money in the interest of the ring yes ay morning. VANDERVEER PREVENTS FRAUD. Knowing that a large amount of money was to be used among the floating vote of the ward, Vanderveer passed the *w«l down the line that In- would prosecute evrry violation l'lc primary election law which came to his knowledge in t!)e First ward. As it was generally known that Vandervect would U Ihe next prosecuting 1 attorney, the money was held the Seattle Star back, and a large number of floater*, sorely disappointed, did not vote at all. In other wards and county precincts on Agncw had confidently counted, he given the unit treatment. Jack Stringer proved the surprise in the country precinct*, polling J a large share •-I the vote which was expected to go to Agnew, and so contributing to hi* defeat. BRIER SHAKES DEFEAT. K. C. Drier came in for a rebuke but slightly less stinging. Otto A. Case, who opposed him for auditor, won a decisive victory with no other candidates to divide the issue. Return-, official and unofficial, received on the voting for county commissioners indicate the nomination of M. J. Carri gan in the First district by a safe plurality, and the probable nomination of Rutherford in the Third district, although George W. Albin ran well. Frank S. Griffith made a much better ■•owing against George I*. Vanderveer for the nomination for prosecuting at torney than was expected, but Vanderveer is nominated by a good majority. Thomas D. Page, who withdrew from the race some days ago. polled a respectable number of votes. Thomas A. Parish is nominated by a large majority for county assessor over William S. Jennings, his only opponent. A. S. Hurrows stands the best chance for the nomination for county superintendent of school* as the count progresses, with J. C. Dickson in second place and gaining. The closest fight on the county ticket is for the nomina tion for coroner. The returns s.hcnv I neck-and-neck race be tween Wiltsie, Snjdc'r and Sparling, with Covva/i a close fourth. Returns on superior judges indicate an even break between the bar primary candidates and the opposition. Wilson R. Gay, Judge fioyd J. Tallman. William II White, Judge A. \V. The Star supported Vanderveer for prosecuting attorney. He polled a majority of the voles. The Star supported Carrigan and Albin for county com missioners. If either is defeated for the nomination, it is on account of the multiplicity of candidates and not because of the disposition of the voters to continue the ringstcrs. Becking ham and Rutherford, in office. A majority of the people voted against them. The Star condemned Levi Ankcny, and returns indicate that Congressman Wesley 1. Jones leads Ankeny for the en dorsement for United States senator in King county, to say nothing of the vote polled by Judge Snell of Tacoma. All of which confirms The Star in the opinion that the peo pie of King county arc on the square and that they consider The Star to be on the square.
