Among the warrants issued are 18 In embezzlement, IH for forgery, 16 for obtaining money m.i.i Fa-lac pretenses, IJ for; grand larceny, 13 for passing iworthless checks and 16 for mtscellaneous crimes. Of all these Hum*. but i 2 stand a uc .i punishmeitl Thai 1- about what the taxpayers may expect of a sheriff whose principal income results from .i graft, and whose deputies are appointed M a reward lor political services, instead of ef ficiency in the catching of criminals There is no lack of -l**.. uties in the sheriffs office, but. almost without exception, they are politicians and they work to perpetuate the county ring in office, while criminals prey -m the community an.l escajw punishment when detected. The condition furnishes a strong reason Robert T. Hodge should be elected the office of tdieriff. Hodge has proven his ability as an officer by catching crim inals when every other deputy assigned on the chase failed. lie ha*, made boom notable captures and. once he takes the trail, he does not rest until tin- criminal is apprehended. lit* In* both the tenacity of purpose and the intelligence to run down the craftiest criminal and, if be were sheriff, there would be many more arrests to the credit of the sheriffs office. With Hodge as sheriff, there would he no politician* hold ing the position of deputy sheriff. The deputies would he of ficers of real ability and they would capture the criminals they •"ere detailed to arrest, or l"-c their jobs. PHILOSOPHY Or CHEWING GUM A Ncit York psychiatrist—which is one who treat* mental disorders—says that ..inn chewing relieves the eardrums of the 'oar and rattle of, 'he city. "V.till find half the passenger*. iv the subway tram*, chew ing gum," he says, "and it 11 because of the noise. Tropic take the only method their suhconscious thinking arrangement sug gests to relieve the condition."* Any excuse for chewing gum is welcome. And in the absence of any excuse at all, the gum 1 hewing goes on anyway. It is worth while to remark that it hat become one -.1 ihe great national industries—that is, the manufacture of the gum ha* V great deal of capital it invested in it, and milium* of people are employed in it—that i*. in chewing it. Considering the great fortunes made in it, let none regard the chewing of gum a* a nsele»s,'frivolous, senseless practice. And yet the amount of energy expended in tint process, if capitalized and conserved, would produce great results. Of course, the individual, even by continuous mastication, which ever calls lor more and more mastication, does tittle, but if the power evolved by the practice in a whole town could be harnessed and applied, it might at least run the generator for the electric light .system. The power used in rapidly working the jaws of hall the people who ride in the New York subway might, if properly utilized, provide motive force for. the trains. This great national industry it the subject of constant satire and ridicule. This 1* because it is not understood, and it may be because it it mainly a female accomplishment Some have said that the practice arises from nervousness— the idle desire to lie busy without doing anything—ami because it fills up the vacuity in conversation. Some hare regarded it as in obedience to the feminine in stinct for the cultivation of patience and self-denial —patience in a fruitless activity and self-denial in the eternal act of masti cation without swallowing. It is no more related to these vir- Ides than it i. to the habit of the reflective cow in chewing her '...I The true explanation it a more philosophical one, and re late, 1.1 the great modern social movement. It is to strengthen and develop and mike more masculine the feminine tinder,aw If women are to take men's place in world affairs, they must begin by shifting from the men to the women tin- heavy, determined lower jaw, which, as everybody knows, is lie most distinctive mark of prowess and power. in a generation or two persistent gui chewing may work this purpose, and then it may cease—or men may be compelled in in- generally to resort to it to preserve their supremacy.
