SAN KKANi IS* July 4. deed ing profusely, staggering from exhati lion, ami almost unconscious. Joe Cans threw up the sponge to Hattling Nelson at tile end of the seventeenth rotlltd of the hig light here this afternoon The tight was a whirlwind of Hying fists from the time the gong was tupped in the first round until tin* close, and there was no doubt among the specta tors that Cans hud planned to win tin fight in five or six rounds, hut. failing in ttils. he became tired, and. although many opportunities i>|> sented them selves, he was Ulialde to deliver a tell ing blow. Nelson took a vast amount of pun ishment without apparent effect. Cans luting punch after punch to tils head, face and body with kalledo-uopic ra pidity Hut the little I hi tie was then all the time, and repeatedly t«M>k three blows fora chance to return one. ev ery time the l»aiie landed his blows told, and, while his face was cut to ribbons and he was beaten unmerci fully in the ftist six round-', he man aged to throw a few into the negro's stomach and kidneys which had a tell ing effect. Nelson was sent to the floor several times, but always res|toudod pioiupt ly to the call. The negro fought with the ferocity of a savage tiger, and he showed Ids rage every time the Hattlei lamb-d one in return. In tin* lifth round Nelson sent a swinging blow to tin* fare, which split Huns' lips through to his teeth, and h* spat out hlot»«l from that time until tin end of the fight. The blow Infuriated the lanky black, and in* lost his head, mixing it closely with Nelson, where the Hattler exchanged blow for blow for fully half a minute. At the end Units was sent Hying backwards with a blow under the chin, which it is claimed Nelson delivered with ids head by butting up suddenly from a crouch ing position. Hans returned to the center of tlu ring more angry than ever, his hatred of the Pane showing in every feature of his face, but his blows from that time lakced steam. The betting at this tint** was three to one on Clans, but it soon veered to even money, and thence to no money at all on Nelson. After the sixth round flans was ap parently too much exhausted to de liver a telling punch, hut Nelson then became aggressive, and by the twelfth round he had rough*-*) it to such an ex tent that tin* negro was all in, and his marvellous defense was broken down. Nelson, on the contrary, grew strong er and more aggressive. He quickly realised that his opponent was unable to inflict any injury on him, and left himself open for all kinds of punches, taking them with a smile, hut Hans was too far gone to do any damage Every time Hans attempted to delivei a blow he received one in return. In th** fifteenth round Nelson landed a straight left punch to his opponent** nose, flattening it to his face, and causing it to bleed profusely. Continued on Page 4.
