M holds its regular meetings Ist f the story, will be mailed free upon application to the Chicago Ledger, Chicago, 111. In answer to a telegram from City Attorney Jno. N. Cook, rela tive to the nature and extent of injuries received by his brother, Joe E. Cook, at Oklahoma City, comes the assurance of reasonable hope for the wounded man’s recovery, together with a statement of the trouble and its result, showing the character of Mr. Cook’s injuries to be less serious than at first re ported. _ The county candidates are put ting in the day at Sand Hill in Sul phur township, having met their first appointment and formally opened the campaign for Miller county at Era yesterday. It is ex pected that each man whose name is honored with a place on the Dem ocratic ticket, will do yeoman ser vice for the success, not alone of himself, but of the entire ticket, in the contest. A rumor reached the city just be fore noon today, of the death of Jno. C. Kirby, Sr., at his home on College Hill. Investigation proved the report incorrect. Mr. Kirby, who has been seriously ill for some days, was taken for the worse, during the morning honrs, and his condition pronounced extremely critical by the attending physicians. He was alive, however, at 12 o’clock noon, and his recovery from similar attacks, in the past, leaves hope, at least, that he may again rally and defeat the grim enemy. Lime. Used in Millions of Homes— 40 Years the Standard. Our West side friends who are not burdened with a rush of busi ness will doubtless feel lost today, when they find the doors of conven tion hall closed and themselves shut off from their accustomed hours pasttime listening to “calls of the roll" and cries of "''Mr. Chairman, which have sounded so incessantly I from the precincts of Ghios opera house during the past ten days. Then, too, will be missed the genial countenances and hearty greetings of the “be-ribboned” host, who, as delegates from the several counties f the district, have done so much to enliven our city all these days. The trial run by the East side fire department yesterday afternoon drew an immense crowd of specta tors, who literally thronged the course along Broad street, over which the run was made. The es -1 ort proved a decided success, re fleeting great credit upon the ex ellent control and efficient man- ageinent under which the company now exists. A false start delayed I the run a few moments beyond the appointed time, but when the alarm again sounded the echo had scarce died away before the rattle of the hose cart and hoof-beats of the fire horses were heard, and the gallant team came dashing down Broad street at a gait of which the crack company of a metropolitan city need not have been ashamed. These runs afford excellent practice for the company, and should be 1 kept up. The sneak thieves, who for some time since have infested our city, 1 giving much trouble to the local j police, appear to have been quite active last night, during the still hours of which some member, or members, of the gang, stole the key to Olivara’s saloon, on the West side, and entering the bar helped himself, or themselves, to certain favorite drinks, carrying off, it is 1 thought, quite a quantity of liquors cigars, etc. The cash drawer was also rifled of $2 in small change, left over night. Later on in the night an attempt was made to break into C. E. Beard's, but, for tunately for Mr. B. the thieves were frightened away before effect ing an entrance. We trust that the officers may succeed in running the gang to earth, and landing every member thereof behind the bars. Fire Laddies' Ball. A grand ball, for the benefit of Texarkana Hose and Ladder Compa ny will be given at the harmony club dancing hall, on Thursday evening, the 23rd instant. This being the first opportunity afforded our citizens for repaying the debt of gratitude due our excellent fire department, it is to be hoped that every citizen of Texarkana will avail himself of same, by uniting in a generous effort to make the event .1 huge success, as it deserves to be. SI2OO Reward. Mr. J. A. Edson, 2nd Vice-Presi dent and General Superintendent of the St. Louis, Southwestern Ry. Co., of Texas, offers a reward of two hundred (200) dollars cash for the arrest and conviction of the party or parties who tampered with the Pottery Switch, near Athens, Texas, wrecking our train, No. 2, on the night of Aug. 1, 1894.
