The business men of Waxahachie bave at last become aroused to the urgent need of an active commercial club. Last Friday afternoon, after the Chicago business men had de parted from the city, a meeting was held In the Elks' hall and the initi atory steps taken in the direction of effecting an organization to be known as the Commercial and Pro gressive Club. Several short talks were made by business men, and a temporary organization effected bv electing Col. T. R. Anderson, pres ident, and I. Mincer, secretary. Among the committees appointed was one to solicit names for mem bership. Another committee has in preparation a letter which after be ing adopted by the club will be printed and a copy mailed to each member of the Chicago delegation. Saturday r ight a mass meeting was to have beeu held at the court house for the pu rpose of meeting Mr. Famham and conferring with him relative to the establishment of the interurban railway between this city and Dallas. Quite a number of busi ness men werepresent but Mr. Farn harn failed to make his arrival. Mr. T. J. Cole explained that Mr. Farn ham had started through from Italy on horseback, leaving there at about 4:40 o'clock and that a horse had been sent from here to Forreston to meet him. While waiting for the I gentleman the time wan spent In dis cussing the commercial club ques tion. Judtce M. B. Templeton, a member of the soliciting committee, obtained the names of about twenty five members. Short talks were made by Judg»· Templeton, T.J. Cole, Ο. II. Chapman, Osce Good win, Col. Jas. S. Davis, R. K. Er win, T. Β Williams, T. A. Ferrie, ι J. Η. Miller, and J. D. McRae. All i «tidorsed the movtrn^nt and all asrreed that a live, active commer cial cluh would b of gr^at value to the city. Mr. Erwin said there were many enterprises which could be encour I aged by a club of this kind, but he j believed the question of most im-j port an ce to Waxahachie just now J ι was that of good roads. He said j that in his opinion good roads lead-1 j Ititt from the different parts of the I country to the county seat were of j as much importance to the town as I j railroads. Osce Goodwin moved that the j ι chair appoint a committee of three to prepare rules and regulations for the government of the club to be presented at the meeting Thursday night tor adoption. The motion car ried and Osce Goodwin, M. B. Tem pleton and T. J Cole compose the committee. At 9 o'clock Mr. Famham had not put In an appearance and the meet-j I ing adjourned subject to the call of j Chairman Cole. Another meeting will be held at I the Elks' hall next Thursday night for the purpose of permanently or ganising the Commercial and Pro- j jrressive club.

NORTH TEXAS COTTON CROP Professor Mally Reports Short age in Top Crop. Houston Chronicle: Professor Fred W. Mally, formerly state entomologist at College Sta tion, was in the city this morning from a visit to all the important cot ton producing sections of North ι Texas. In the opinion of Professor Mally, there will be a scant top crop this season, owing to the Inclement weather which North Texas has been having. The wind blew down j a great deal of the new bolls and so I scattered the bolls that were sliirhtly I open that picking will be rendered j almost impossible. If, however, good, sunsbiney weather should pre vail for a month the crop will not be entirely a failure, though it will not j be nearly so large as was anticipated. The weevil, too, has gotten in its destroying work in a large area of North Texas, and many a fair field has been devastated by its ravages. The evil is not quite so bad as many people have b«en led to believe. Professor Mally lays great stress upon the fact that nearly all the farmers in North Texas have gone into the nursery business ^connec tion with their farm. Orchards of pear and quince are being planted daily, and no farmer considers his farm complete without from four to ten acres in fruit. While not as large a variety can be raised in North Texas as in the coastcountry, the fruits raised there have a better flavor than here, and the yield per! acre is somewhat larger. The Last Sermon. Yesterday morning at the Metho dist church Rev. C. R. Wright p-eached his last sermon for the present conference year. A large audience was in attendance and the sermon was an excellent one. Mr. Wright said that the year's work as pastor of the Waxahachie station had been very pleasant and he was willing to come back here if the an nual conference so willed. During the year just closing he said he had received about eighty members into the church and had raised Û4000 for all purposes. At the conclusion of the League service last night the members of the church crowded to the altar to skaka hands with the pastor, showing in this w»y their appreciation of his work during this year. Many were heard to express the hope that he wjuld be returned. Atentioo Fraters. Our regular meeting next Thurs day night tnere will be a communi cation of ten pages read from the grand lodge. The recent visit of the two home seekers' and investigators' excur sions into the Coast Country of Texas, under the auspices and direc tion of the Southern Pacific Land and Immigration department is good ahd satisfactory evidence of the in terest the world at large is taking in Τ exas and anything which per tains to the development of the state. The wonderful success which ha* followed the cultivation of rice in the rich prairie lands of the Coast Country has resulted in the industry ««curing a wide advertisement the world over, in consequence of this, farmers from Illinois, Iowa and others of the Western States have sought and are rapidly extending the new El Dorado and are rapidly ex tending the cultivation of the white grain. *>n tue two soamern raemc ex corsions mentioned, nearly 1Ô0M per sons, many of them wealthy invest ors, made a tour of the rice, oil and truck belt of the State under most favorable circumstances. They were met with open arms and hearts and shown the advantages and resources of the section in question. It is a foregone conclusion that this splen did method of advertising Texas will be productive of excellent results, and add thousands of thrifty inhabi tants to the population of the State. The low rates made into the agricul tural section^ is naturally making Texas the cynosure of the farming sections of the West. Add to this the determined effort the Southern Pacific is making to stimulate the homeseeking enthusiasm, and it is a positive assurance that the coming spring will witness the advent of much new blood into the territory traversed by the line in question.
