MORNING APPEAL. THIESDAY. ..JIM: II. 1S73 SENATOR CONKLING AND THE AD MINISTRATION. COLLISION AND SERIOUS AT RENO. ACCIDENT la the press dispatches we find the follow ing. Washington, June 12. Senator CoiikJing, who was here for four days, procured his pass port for Europe through subordinates of the State department, as his relations with Secre tary Evarts precluded personal intercourse with that gentleman. During Conkling's stay here it is said by his intimate friends that he did not call at the White House, and further, that he has abstained entirely from recommendations in behalf of persons who seek presidential favors, leaving himself free to oppose or support the President when Con gress meets, as he may see fit. The rills which feed the great stream of telegraphic news are so easily polluted with the drift and discolorations of idle and mis cliievous rumor that one is constrained to a habit of cautiousness in accepting, in the light of unadulterated truth, such statements as the foregoing. If we of the Morning Ap peal believe it true, the wish that it should be so is father to the thought that it is. We have a very great respect for some of the traits and possibilities of Mr. Conkling's char acter. He is very able, very nice-rnin led, very largely gifted with language and a very acute lawyer. We hardly know what a .states man is but Uonklmg comes close to our crude notions of what a statesman is and ought to be. His arguments show clean, judi cious, critical scholarship and very large ana lytical powers. His grasp is instant, mascu line, strong. His manner of presentation is caustic and incisive. There is great elabora tion but no sacrifice of solid ideas to words. His structure is ornate, but the substance is solid. lie combines elegance and something like ruggedness in an admirable degree. The faulty side of the man's character i his con stant and undisguised pride. He is as haughty as a prince of the blood royal. His enemies speak of him as a vain man and the popular mind has been taught to regard him as a strut ting peacock. But this is a mistake. He is too proud to be vain, as he is too largely and loftily self-respectful to be susceptible to the petty dishonesties of the political peculator. He is a most admirable Senator and a very skilled and useful legislator. This latter is a rare faculty among public men even public men of Ion? standing. The toil and busi-, ness, the attentiveness and constant participa tion in the work of the legislature requisite to the character of a true law-maker, these are not at all common traits among Senators and members of the House of Representatives Mr. Conklins: deserves the rank ho holds among the Senators of the Republican side. He has been consistent, faithful and strong. He stood by the administration of President Grant with all the courage and heroism of his nature. No man is more valorous and indif ferent to danger or calumny than he when oc casion requires. His loyalty to the third term possibility had much to do with decreas ing his chances for the Presidential nomina tion at Cincinnati. This man is the furthest possible remove irom a demac:onie. lie nas a manful way of standing by his political friends and supporters as all healthful-minded and loyal-hearted men always have but he cannot debase himself. The present Admin istration has, with unprecedented meanness and want of the chivalric instinct, ostenta tiously ignored him and his claim to be consulted and recognized as a loader of the Republican party. He has the first right, as the distin mulshed Senator of a great Mate ana as a member of the party which made Mr. Hayes the President to be counseled with and lis tened to. Instead of being treated with the consideration to which he is entitled, the President selects for the head of his Cabinet a. man whose course has been personally of fensive to Mr. Conkling. The elements who have conspired against the Senator in his na tive State hav e been led by ex-Senator Fen ton. The difference between these two is irrepara ble. William M. Evarts has been offensively sympathetic with Mr. Conkling's enemies, rivals and detractors in the Republican partj. He sided with Andrew Johnson. He has never been heartily with the Republican party. His attitude has been as offensive as that of Carl Schurz. His presence in the Cabinet is a conspicuous affront to the Sena tor from New York. We greatly admire the highly self-respectful attitude of Mr. Conk ling and we believe him so thoroughly capa ble of deporting himself as it is hinted in the above he is doing, that we are much inclined to believe the statement to be true in sub- Tlit Rono Journal of yesterday mornintt informs us as follows A. J. Bunting and M. Harrison were crossim; the railroad at the Sierra street crossing yesterday morning with a two-horse wagon, just as the lightning train was com ing in. The consequence was the train struck the team and horses and run three car lengths before it stopped. One of the horses was killed and the other so badly injured that it had to be shot. Bunting was thrown under the wagon, and had a narrow escape from death, but got off with injuries hich will only lay him up for a few days. Harrison was but slightly hurt. We have investigated this matter carefully and have come to the conclusion that the accident was the result of carelessness and thoughtlessness on the part of Bunting and Harrison. Vet the railroad is not entirely blameless by any means. The bell was ringing, it is true, but the train was coming at a speed of from 15 to 18 miles an hour, and such fast traveling through the tow n must be stopped. It is not right. No train should be allowed to run through town faster than at the rate of 4 or 5 miles an hour. They should now give the necessary orders and enforce them. The people make the demand, and request that it be complied, with. The damage by yesterday's collision will aggregate about $T00, as besides the loss of the horses, Mr. Harrison's wagon was knocked all to pieces, Hereafter we trust that all who cross the railroad tracks will be more careful. It is often the case that men drive across their thoughts busy with busi ness affairs, and it is a wonder that more such accidents do not occur. A man is always taking chances driving across a railroad track, and when he does he should always have his wits about him, and hwt'j there is no possible danger. Too Cheap. About two weeks ago, a couple of Mexicans arrived in town with six good horses, which they offered for sale. The animals were pronounced by judges of horse flesh to be worth an average of 100 each, and the Mexicans disposed of them at the price they asked 275 for the lot, the entire six being purchased by two men in partnership. The purchasers disposed of the horses to other parties, giving in some instances' guarantees to the purchasers to refund the money should the owners of tho horses turn up, the fact of the Mexicans having disposed of the animals so cheap having created the impression that they did not come into their posession honestly. Yesterday Sheriff Harper received a dispatch from Captain Rabbits, Deputy Sheriff of Eureka at Palisade, in struefing him to arrest a small sized Mexican, with horses branded F, the property of Woodruff it Elinor. This description filled the bill for one of the Mexicans and some of the horses; bvt the birds had flown and it is so long since they .started on their flight that it is impossible to trace them. The horses are here, however, and it is probable that those who were congratulating themselves on their great bargains in horses w ill have to surrender June 11. Murderer caught. The Silver State of Monday informs us of the arrest of Mills, the negro murderer, as follows A dispatch from Halleck Station received yesterday says that a reward was offered for the capture of Mills, the negro who shot J? in nerty at that place. A party of Indians started in pursuit of the fugitive, but before they had time to overtake him he was caught by a rancher named Pixley in Lamoille Valley Yesterday he was taken to Elko and lodged in jail. It is very probable that he would have been lynched if captured by the citizens of Halleck as the feeling against him is very bitter. A German who has a wife and child in Sac reinento and who was on his way to St. Louis, fell in a fit at Winnemucca on Monday. He is thought to be insane; and whiskey is sus pected of the parentage of his condition. A Jury has been empanneled to try Rover, and the'trial is now progressing in the District Court for Washoe county. The Australian Team is at Winnemucca. SEW AUVEBTIsEMOTS. CARSON THEATER. THE INCOMPARABLE ORATOR, COL ROBERT G. INGERSOLL, Who has won even greater triumphs on the lecture plat form than upon the political stump, will deliver hit cele brated lecture, which ha created such an immense furore in the Eastern and Western cities, entitled The Liberty of Man, Woman and Child." As he was traveling toward California he was arrested on a charge of an attempt to defraud his creditors by leaving them in the lurch. Now he ha3 turned round and sued his suers for damages in $5,000. The Morning Appeal is for Perkins and him prosecuted. May he fetch em! The dead body of a man supposed to be that of Edward Griffith, a native of Balti more, was found on Tuesday mornin; about eight miles from Reno on the Peavine Road. There were indications that he had perished in a fit. The Journal says he was an indus trious, sober man tho' but little known there about. They say there is a project on foot in Lon don to give General Grant a reception by the working-men. Tho heart of England is warm toward this great soldier. Again and again he reminds them of their "Wellington. The good grey head that all men knew was a daily sight for many years on the Londan streets. He walked those busy thoroughfares unattended and in the modesty of his simple greatness. Nuw comes the Englishman from over the sea, the- best sample of an Anglo-Saxon warrior living. The people know him. They know just the manner of man he is, instinctively. Emphat ically there is "no nonsense" about him. When he went to fight he went to fight and not to sit for his picture or make himself the subject of a poem. That's how he won, and how his winning was so welcome. The plain duty of a plain man was what he sublimely did and the people know it. He has vindicated the incomparable value of real manhood. President Hayes is reported in favor of the double standard. This is probably true. He doubtless thinks the double standard an ap paratus for carrying water on both shoulders and so he tumbles to the racket as the slangwhangers say. Horsey, there's no doubt of that is Grant. We like him all the better for it and so say we all of us, God save the Queen." MORNING APPEAL. Ill l RSI) AY JISE NOTES AND QUERIES. It seems rprv harvest-like to sniff the odor of the new mown hay as it lies in miniature wind -rows iu front yards and gardens around the town. Within these late balmy days we have heard the unmistakable sound of the sharpening of the scythe by the mowers as they rest, half lazily, and make a pretense of w hetting the edge of their implement of weedy war. The Master tells us, somewhere, to beware of debt, forasmuch as that which is lent ofttimes loseth self and friend and bor rowing dull the edge of husbandry. Time is pictured to us as an old limn with an hour glass and scythe. As the days grow newer and faster, Time will ere long need to be repre sented in a photograph bestriding a rnowiug machine a Buckeye Reaper possibly, with Kail's sale price in cabalistic letters blazoned with the strokes of some deft brush charsred whh the contents of a marking pot. But the new mown grass and clover, lying there in shado and sunshine smell sweetly, let Time take on what shapes he may; and the refresh ing delights of such out door fragrances grow- not old, nor do they change and go out of data with the fickle changes of the world of Fashion Do we moralize, and etherea- I123 and indolize over this patchwork of ours, leaving facts to come and go and find ex pression and record as they will, elsewhere? We think not. We think we infuse some thing of the newsy habit and not a little of that which is business-like into these Ns. and Qs. For example: Yesterday we saw at Mr. John G. Fox's bookstore a pen, shaped and fashioned like any pen of steel, and looking like a steel-pen which had undergone some slight corrosion and we saw Mr. Fox take that pen, dip it into some clean water which stood in a basin; and we took it from his hand and wrote with it, making letters of a violet hue upon a piece of cap. That was all there was a pen and some clean water; and being dipped in water shed ink and we wrote with it in letters as plain as those which shone out upon the wall to the consternation of Belteshazzar and his wicked company. This it La PI lime m iracuhuse the miraculous pen; and Mr. Fox will, for a proper consider ation furnisii forth of the same in lots to suit applicants We met our respected friend Mr. Alexander of the Reno Gazette upon Carson street yesterday. Has the carriage and demeanor of a young gentleman of excellent parts, has that same Mr. Alexander .They showed us some trade dollars they were coining at the Mint yesterday and said ways toll by this hour-glass when the proper time had arrived to unscrew that artificial limb and U3e it as a club wherewith to maul inquisitive people who came about him to ask, When are we going to have a market Mr. Hunt is now negotiating with the Mexi can Government through Minister Foster, for the transfer thereto of this priceless relic. The disturbed state of affairs between the present Mexican Government and our own, growing out of the troubles on the Rio Grande, have temporarily arrested these ne gotiations but that they will be culminated to the satisfaction of Mr. Hunt and his nu merous customers, Mr. Purcell assures us will be demonstrated in the most gratifying manner in a very few days. Anyone ac- ouainted with Mr. P. will be assured that his statement is well founded. House open at all hours and the bar and restaurant con stantly supplied with the best the market affords Ala Richey came into this citj yesterday from Hope Valley, bringing with him no less than two humlred and thirty-five dozen mountain trout. That is 2,820 trout How many were engaged in tin's tremendous killing, and how long it took to catch them all, e do not know didn't stop to ask, in fact. But we know that the trout were brought here and that they are deliciously fresh, for we have had the actual experience of a bountiful string of the same. These wDl average we'll say seven inches in length. Abe disposed of a lot of them here and took the rest to Virginia. If any fishermen of any parts can beat this catch, for numbers (all taken with hook and line) they are at liberty to bring us the actual proof Have you had any Sody yet LOB 1NGERS0LL. HOTEL ARRIVALS. This distinguished talker is too widely cel ebrated in this country from the Atlantic to the Pacific, to need any extended heralding at our hands.
