SEMI-WEEKLY VOL. V.—No. 51 FALLON, NEVADA, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18. 1908 Ten Cents a Copy CWEMION RESULTS Democrat! Hod Enthusiastic Mceling nd Put up a Good Ticket. The e locradc convention is a thin,;; the past. As was ex pected lie Non Part’sans put up a hard fight to gel control of the organization, and not until the harpoon had been thrown into them s. veral times and twisted and the big steam roller run over them did they “go away back and s t down.” The hardest fight was in the committee on credentials, where an effort was made to unseat tl e delegates fiom Jessup, Hux y and Hazen. These deleg; cs were finally seated, but not until the issue was fought out on the floor of the convention. After that the Bird of Harmony reign ed over the deliberations unti the time for nominating of two Assemblymen. Then it was that the Non-Partisans sacrificed every principle for which they had been contending to “get even” with the editor of the Standard, who was a candidate. Lem Allen acted as chairman of the convention and made a good presiding officer. The following were the com mittee on credentials; A. P. Bet tersworth, chairman; Lee Wight man and Fulton H. Sears. Committee on Permanent Or- ganization and Order of Busin* ss: i W. H. Sifford, chairman; E. P. I Osgood and E. W. Buur. When nominations were in or-| der the first office presented was* that of Sheriff. There were two nominations, E. F. Kilker and Dick Wiides. The former re ceived 18 votes and the latter 9. On motion, Mr. Kilker was de clared the unanimous choice of the convention. For Treasurer, J. W. Richards, Democracy’s grand old warhorse, was nominated by acclamation. There were two nominations made for the office of Recorder, G. W. Likes and R. E. Wood, the former receiving the nomination by a vote of 17 to 11. J. W. Sitton, the present in cumbent, was nominated for County Clerk by acclamation. Chas. Wight man and J. B. Young were named for Assessor ship, the former being success ful by a vote of 17 to 11. Jack Coniff was nominated for! the office of Surveyor by accla- j mat ion. W. C. Grimes received the1 nomination for District Attorney without opposition, and the nomi nation for Pub.ic Administrator was hanied to I. H. Kent as a joke, Mr. Kent being in Rawhide on business at the time. The Long Term Commissioner ship was given to Ed. McLa. e by acclamation. For Short Term Commissioner J. L. Cochran won over L. L. Downs by a vote of 15 to 12. Lem Allen and N. R. F tzpat rick were named for the Assem bly. Judge E. W. Black received the nom nation for Justice of the Peace of New River precinct at the hands of the delegates from that precinct. This nomination is an especially goad one. as Kooooooooooioo:! 5 EXPOSITION BUILDING. 9 0 B Never in the history of Nevada 0 0* has there been brought together such an exhibit of the agricultu- B B ral products of the state as that p C* of the first Churchill County Fair. It is of a character to in- a B vite th" admiration of the coun- fl a try and should be perpetuated, n 0 If the men and women who ft have made th a first fair possible 0 will but lend themselves to the W promotion of an enterprise wh ch B B is the logical and should be th" jj e* natural outcome of this success- a ful exhibition, of a certainty B B lheir names will g down into jj n history on the roll of honor of a B Churchill county. 9 Perpetuate Ihi* exhibit by the 9 0 erection of a permanent Expo- 0 0 sition Bui.ding at Hazen on the 0 a main line of the Southern Pacific a 9* railroad. 0 At first blush this would appear Q to be a great undertaking, but V K under close scrutiny will reveal A 3 itseif as much easier of accorn- 9 plishment than was the inaugu- 9 B raton of the Fair. A few hun- B 5 dred dollars would erect a suit- i 9 able budding, close to the depot, 9 B where Hast and West bound pas- B 3 sengers might have an opportun- I 9 ity of seeing, with eyes which B 0 must believe, the products of the B 3 most wonderful land under the 9 sun. In such a movement the 9 B Southern Fac tic railroad could be B 3 retied upon to give all assistance I 9 possible. For the asking, in all B B probability, they would donate B 5 the land and perhaps materially S B assist in the construction of a 9 B suitable building, For the rest Q S it would only remain for the a 0 ranchers to renew the perishable 9 B exibits and there can scarce be a J question but that the railroad X 9 could be relied upon to furnish 9 B free transportation for these re- Q newals. a Think it ovsr and act. rnmmmmmmmmmmamtimtmmmxmmmmemmaoaum A Good Democrat. Judge W. H. A. Pike arrived in town Tuesday to hold rourt. A repr. sentat ve of the Standard walked from the de.xrt with the Judge and iri ridentally mentioned that the Demo cratic couuty county convention was in session. ‘‘Well,’’ said the distin guished jurist, "Judge Curler came down with me to try a divorce case, but the Democrats being assembled n the court room, Judge Curler will have to wait. Nothing can disturb a Demo, cratic meeting," The Judge heard the divorce case in the District Attorney’s office while the Democratic party help possession of the court room. Death of Mrs. Reed. About two weeks ago Mrs. Reed, of Honyeye, N. Y., mother of C. P. Reed, of the Wonder Lumber Co., ar rived in Fallon on a visit to her son. Wednesday evening the heavy hand of the Almighty was laid upon her and ahe passed into the great here after. It is reported that she was taken sick on the train, en route to visit her son. The remains will be taken to Her home in the East for interment. Mr. Reed has the heartfe t sympathy of the entire community in the loss uf one so dear. Duck Shooting Is On Mark Wildes, Lon Hammond and Ed. Robinson went out shoot-; ing Tuesday and came home with twenty geese and forty-eight ducks, and the Standard ac knowledges the receipt of a fine goose and a nice big mallard. County Clerk Sitton tried his hand at bringing down a few ducks, with the result that he killed twenty before breakfast time. W. K. Lee and famiiy returned yes terday from three weeks camping in the mountains near Eleven Meadows. Judge Hlack has saved the tax payers of the county thousands of dollars by his refusal to be a party to graft methods in office. A WONDERFUL DISPLAY Exhibits At the County Fair En tirely Surpass Expectatons Of Promoters. The Churchill County Fair opened its doors promptly at the appointed time. Wednesday noon. Dr. C. A. Hascall. chairman of the committee on arrangements, in a few appropriate remarks, fairly launched the enterprise. At the conclusion of his remarks, he introduced Fulton H. Sears, the orator of the day. Mr. Sears is one of the newcomers, but he is a man that takes a deep inter est in all that pertains to the de velopment and upbuilding of i his adopted home. He is an able speaker and he made his way quickly into the hearts of h s hearers by the thorough and complete knowledge of the needs of Churchill county which he dis played. The betterment of the public roads was the burden of his talk and he impressed his hearers with conclusive argu ments which in the near future are apt to be fraught with prac tical results. The attendance on the opening day was all that could have been expected. Considering that the ladies and gentlemen behind the enterprise had only two weeks in which to launch this first annual Churchill County Fair, and the results are marvelous and makes certain the organiza tion of a pennahent fair associa tion. The interest aroused is best evidenced by the agricultur al products. This is about the busiest season of the ranchers, but they have found time to gather an exhibit of the products of their ranches such as has nev er before been seen in the State. To those who have not seen _ the exhibits this would appear to be the natural exaggeration of a newspaper intent on lauding home products, but this fair fol- j lowing immediately on the heels of the State Fair allows of com-1 parison that carry with them the conviction that this exhibition of Churchill county products is far superior to any thing ever before exhibited in the State. It is an exhibition which' should be perpetuated. The limited space of a newspaper article will not admit of a detail-, ed description of the exhibits. It j is sufficient to state that in every instance these exhibits were of a grade which would warrant the most skeptical in investing in the1 land of the sage brush and cac tus. If the men have been so suc cessful in bringing forth the best that the land can produce, what! is to be said of the work of the women in the domestic field, the product of the home which they have on exhibition. It must be borne in mind that all these ex hibits can honestly be taken as an average of the general pro* duction, for the simple and very effective reason that from the inception to the culmination of the ente: prise, the time was so limited that no special effort could be made to do other than gather together samples of the every day products of the home Do you know that c($ie Rees Pharmacy Has moved to the Churchill County Bank Bldg? Report of the Conditions of this Wonderfully Rich Estate In Fairview Farview Mizpah shares will soon go to $10.(10 and higher backed by the real merits of the Mizpuh mine and as sociated properties with their enormous ore bodies as an asset. Trading in tois desirable mining se curity will begin on the New York curb about November 1st, as the ship ping of high grade ore will commence promptly on that date. The balance due of $45,000 on pu> chase price of the Fairview Mizpah estate has been paid off in full and the deed to the company was placed on record at Fadon Nevada, Churchill County Records office. Sept., 8, 1S08. John J. McDonald, Steve Wolschlag, Rudolph Kneer, and D. J. Kennedy with other stock holders furnished the money.. Before John J. McDononald, Steve Wolschlag, and Rudolph Kneer paid over their share of the money they haJ the Mizpah mine examined by W. P. Day of the Woldorf Mine, Colorado, and this is what he found after care fully sampling the ore bodies ss ex posed in the workings of the property: Ten feet of ore in bottom of 70 foot shaft, sampled clear across, averaged $88.47. Five feet of ore at 200 foot level sampled clear across averaged $34.21. Eighteen inches of sulphide ore along side of five feet above averaged $2:13.45 Six to nine inch seam talc in upraise 150 foot level averaged $235. 46 Assayed August 10th, 1908 by the Pa cific Refinery and Assay Office, 409 Mission St., San Francisco, Cal, Reserving a duplicate ef each sample the same lot was assayed again at Denver, Colo., by R. E. Wood Co,, 1734 Arapahoe Street with the following result: Ten feet of ore bottom of shaft sampled clear across $81.24. Five feet of ore 200 foot level samp led clear across $37.30. Eighteen inches along side above five feet $235.89 Six to nine inches talc in upraises $231.89. To further prove the richness of the Mizpah, D. J. Kennedy invited John J. McDonald and Rudolph Kneer to vis it the Mizpah and sample it again on Sept. 4th, 1908, at which time Mr. Mc Donald took five samples haphazard from the 200 foot level to the bottom of the shaft; the samples were assayed on Sept. 9th, by George A. James Co., 371 Bush Street, San Francisco, Cal., with the following result: Two feet high grade talc average $884.02. Sulphide ore at 200 foot level $248.07. Quartz about three feet in shaft $13617. Quartz about four feet in shaft $73. 60. Wall rock $7.37 Some late assays from the company of J. A. Pearce, Fuirview, Nevada: High grade quartz $177.30; high grade quartz. $204.56; high grade quartz *236.75; high grade talc $839.45; high grade quartz $122.82; high grade quartz $2o5.84; high grade talc $1,255. 45; high grade talc $994.95. The company has a splendid treas ury on hand although not a single share of treasury stock has been sold to the public aud none for sale. Agressive development work has been caried on since the purchase of the property last October, begining w.th a shaft right down in high grade ore for seventy feet, proving the con tinuity of same as well as dip of the vein. The contour of the Mizpah moun tain being a favorable one for a fine working tunnel, after establishing the eeartainty of the big Mizpah vein go ing down, a long tunnel of 450 feet was driven to catch the main ledge at a depth of 230 feet perpendicular. Encountering the huge ledge over 50 feet wide at the 230 foot level, 200 [Continued on Last Page.] and farm. Under these exceptional con ditions the exhibits cf fancy needlework, of art and the culi nary department are the most wonderful, for it must be remem bered that no time was allowed for special preparation and that these home exhibits were gather ed together almost out of hand by the ladies’ committee, and are honestly representative of the every day work of the Churchill county housewife. To Whom It May Concern The day after the Rawhide fire 1 started for that camp with a friend of mine and a couple of other gentlemen, all of us being losers by the fire, when an effort was made to stop me from carrying my friends by the manager of the K. C. Stage Co., on the grounds that I would have to have a license for carrying passengers. It has come to a pretty pass when a man cannot carry his own friends free of charge. These same people have gone so far as to no tify the Sheriff to arrest me if I start ed out of Fallon with a fellow passen ger. I have never yet charged one ot these passengers for riding, and pro pose to carry any man that I wish to at any time. Wm. Mears. The District Court. Judge W. H. A. Pike, who has just returned from a month’s visit to his old home in Maine, came over from Reno to hold court, the first time in many months. The court allowed a divorce to Mrs. J. W. Carroll, wife of the saloon-keeper who was convicted of manslaughter in Hazen about eighh teen months ago. He was sentenced to five years imprisonment. Judge Cur ler appeared for Mrs. Carrol. Judge Pike instructed the foreman of the grand jury, J. W. Ferguson to convene that body for November 6, the date set for the next sitting of the District Court. Vote of Thanks We the members of the Fallon Com mercial Club Band desire to thank all 1 those who assisted us in making the I celebration on Labor Day a success. F. Harvey Smith, H. Clinton, Secretary. President. Th* Standard for all the news. Badges for Bryanltes. The Standard is just in receipt of a consignment of very hand some Bryan button badges from the East, on which there is a a splendid portrait of the great commoner surrounded by the in scription, “I gave my dollar, did you?” Every Democrat in Churchill county should have one of these buttons on the lapel of his coat and the sooner the bet ter. A good deed is twice done if its done quickly and the soon er you come forward with your dollar for the prosecution of the national Democratic campaign, the more effective is likely to be the work of the national cam paign committee. The fund is beginning to show signs of a healthy growth in and around Fallon. Seven contributions have been received this w’eek. The badge will be a receipt for your dollar. Those who have already subscribed can have their badge at any time by calling at the Standard office. Step lively, gentleman, and get in line with your dollar. Churchill Standard An Independent Democratic Paper A. P. Beitersworth. Editor and Proprietor Democratic National Ticket For President WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN of Nebraska For Vice-President JOHN WORTH KERN of Indiana A Poor Start. After the nominations were over at the Democratic conven tion Tuesday Lem Allen and N.! R. Fitzpatrick, the nominees for the Assembly, in open conven tion declared that it elected they would vote for Francis G. New lands for United States Senator in spite ot every protest. That kind of talk may sound good to a handful of Democratic dele gates, but is it calculated to in spire the independent voter with confidence? We are inclined to doubt the wisdom of the pre election declaration of these gcntleni en. Daily in his talks over the country Win J. Bryan ndvocfl. tes the election of United States Senator by direct vote of the people. It is a Dem ocratic principle and is consider ed one of the strong planks in tin* platform of tin National Democratic party. It is design ed by tins method to break the power of i he plutocrats, the trusts and the predatory rich, who were wont to purchase their seats in the upper house ot congress, and place the elective machinery' in the hands of the common people. The Republican convention at Goldfield and the Democratic convention at Tonopah both de clared lor the election of United States Senator by popular vote, the action was ratified by the Chairman of the Democratic State Committee and the Chair man of the Republican State Committee signing articles of agreement to that effect. The challenge to go before the people came from Senator Newlands himself, and now the first intim ation that the agreement will not be kept comes from the New lands side of the house. The Standard has all along doubted the binding effect of these agreements on the hold over Senators, but there can be no question as to the moral ob ligation of the members of the Legislature who are to be elect ed this fall, Any man who is not willing to abide by the wish of the party as expressed by the State convention will surely find a rocky road with those voters who believe in lair play. “Shall the People Rule,, "Shall the people rule?” asks Bryan, and a lot of people are making fun of him for it.
