The story telegraphed all over the .ountry that Secretary Lincoln had furnimhed the Marquis of Lorne and IPrinees Louise a guard on account of, I'enian threats ansldet their lives, Is entirely without foundation, Col. Tourtellette, of the United statesanny. who has been playing flunky, and lackey, to the royal pair in their pilt gimage through the country, was utfraid of Indians and not Fenians, and asked am eseort of ter men to protect the party. The detail was made on the request of acaptain and Irevet colonel of the United States army, who has neither manly dignity or good sense enough to keep from dhlgraelng the uniform he wears. There is a wide difference between the dignified courtesy and generous hos pitality for which the omicers of our army are distinguished, and the au lierservient toadyismof the aggregious wa, who Is not only disgusting his I rother omoers, but the nat.On gener ally. by playing Anotman and card re reiver for English nobility. THe close of the year sees the gap in the Northern PaNlfie lallrond reduoed to 300 miles, which it is expected wlHl be filled up. by the end of the com 1mny's fiscal year, June :W(th, 1tt3. The earnia of the road even now ex rwed the expectations of Its friends, and with the through business it will !,ave upon conmpletlon, It can hardly tall to make satifaetory r.tunns to itl stockholders of Ibnth clasues. The ,omitpletion of penlding negotiations for a large block of the coniapivy's land will reduce the amount of outhtasnding preferred stock to less than thirty niil. Hons, upon which dividends cant, Inl till probability, be wgularly pItld .arons now on, and should the conpleted roed yield a revenue proportional to what the present niileage loes, the time is not hr distant wheni the coin soon stock will also yield a regular int tnuae to Its holders. Recently the de pressions in the whole stc*k market has had its effect on this, as well us 'ther stocks of lesas ntrinsic value anid it haa declined somnewhsat, giving throe who wish, an opportunity to tbay nflre advantageously than they could have dlone a short time ago. Duke, was the refusal of the latter to marry Nutt's daughter, after having ruined her. The aflkir has created a preofe.m d sensation and in the theme of conver sUaton. Members of the tar of i'a. ette county met this morning and wssed a remAlution of condolence. The funeral of Cap. Nutt took place at I o'clock p. m., and was attended by a comnpuny of the 10th regiment, mem hern of the bar, grand army, and Ma mlnic fraternity, who had charge of the burial exercises. The banks and all phuys of husiness were closed. The, condition of Mrs. Nutt is regarded as I critlcal, and great fesars are entertaied for her daughter. Pamnrrrsum, Pa., Dec. 26.-A later disgltch says: "Intense feeling against I Duke halus developed within tie last twenty-four hours, it being pretty clearly shown that he has been beg ging off for some time, and had pre Moed a meeting at the hotel on I4un day for a settlement of the dimculty. No marks of violenteare visible on his person, while Nutt had cuts and ruises on face and arms. Itis quietly hinted that there is a prospect of citi sets taking the law into r own hands. INSURANCE. The evening's exerclHen were opened by Judge lRos, presiding at the organ, who rendered some very fine selectlon, from Moart, which were loudly applauded, show ing that the childreni uppreelate good nmjuic, as well as the older ones. Rev. Mr. Horsfall asked the children onmie very appropriate questions conacerniing Christnmas and the birth of Christ, I which all were repliet to with alacrity. The presents were then distributed. Mr. Graham, Mr. Ruoe and Mr. Ber nand aaisted Mr. Bernand in takitig the gifts rron the tree, and au each name was called, the little one came forward and got his or her gift. The presents were very nice and pretty, as well as useful. The citisens of Miles City are a people of nightly religion. Few attend the mornlag services. If it was gen erally known that as muchb study was givesn by the difbrent pastors on their morning prepgratrioms as 'the evening, a fuller attendaace would be guaran teed. Last Sunday morning the 88d verse of the 16th chapter of St. John was the subject of Rev. Win. Horsfall's remarks-"And I have declared unto them Thy inae, and will declare it; that the love wherewith thine hust loved me may be In them and I in .hem." To have the Slvior's iIlace we must drink of His cup and be bap tised in His faith. It was not the fruit that Eve plucked and ate that .umed the curie upon the world, but the seeds of the desire ,,f evil in her heart. The source of sorrow is sin. How are you to appear on the Judy ment day to obtain a seat at the Iordm right? In order to obtain this ever Ulsting)oy we should clothe oursellves In purfty, lean upon His breast and obey Hls word. Have faleith in His cros, and out of this will come our salvatlons. In all time of trlibulaton, trust In Him, and abound in his works, and your labor will not be InI vain. O4ld setrs. As melis. He stated that the dimculty arose out of an old grudge whi.c Dwyer said he wished to settle, anll settle It only with a six-shooter. They were both employed as section hands on the rhilrnmud, and the shooting curred in the meetion house, both partles at th' time being under the in luence of whisky. Dwyer made sev eral gun plays on Cokvy about an hour before the shoot occurred, and which In every instance, he, (Cokey, tried'o persuade him to let up on the idea of that kind and to settle. He thought at the time that he retired to his bed, that the matter was settled, but was called on by Dwyer to comue down stairn, which at last he did, and as he came towards the head of the stairs, he encountered his enenmy who had a gun in his hand, and who made the remark that he would kill him, or words to that efbet. Whereupon Cokey pulled a 44-100 slx4hhooter and shot Dwyer twice, one ball tsaaing efbet in the stomach, the other penetrating cise to the heart. He fel to the fl.or anddied.
