The people of the reputed oldest town in the United States may yet have it brought home to them that honesty is the best polloy, after all. If tbe Territorial institutions be crippled on account of those bonds across the way, it will be adios to Santa Fe with the people of New Mex. ico. rROM Taos county, comes the news that Hon. Pedro Sanches, a well known and shrewd politician, will represent the county of Taos with the proxies at the forthcoming republican convention at Albuquerque. This may indicate that Hon. Tom Burns will not be a candidate for delegate honors and that tbe stories to tbe effect that he will be such may have no foundation in faot. It is somewhat surprising to learn from tbe report of the geological sur. vey, tbat one-third of the area of the United States is still public domain, un- ocoupied and open to entry. This is exclusive of Alaska, with its vast stretches of territory unexplored and unknown. This large proportion of the country, however, is land which it is not worth while to settle upon. It is either arid or mountainous, and of fers little Or no inducement to settlers. There is hope that the desert plains will be reduced tc cultivation eventu ally by irrigation. Efforts have been made by settlers to mike the desert smile and blossom as tbe rose, and these t Sorts have been e'iccessful in some cases, in others, tbe settlers have undergone great hardships and suffered much misery. The report of tbe geological survey, however, takes a hopeful view of the irrigation problem. Large areas will be made arable wben reclaimed by the proper use of water. IMMUNITY OP PERJURERS. Tlrao and again, particularly wben a new caso comes to the front, Trie Optio recalls tbe remarks of the late Samuel B. Axtell, pointing out the dangerous frequency of pet Jury in tbe courts of New Mexico, and tbe immunity which tbe perjurers appear to enjoy, In bis opinion, it was a (.hocking and shameful state of things when men could go upon the witness stand and commit tbe most unblushing perjury with impunity. But that is tbe exist ing situation. Is there no punishment forperjuryp, Searoh tbe court oalen dars and there will be found but few convictions for tbe crime. Yet there Is not session of the court wben wit uesses are not convicted out of their own mouths of having borne false wit ness. The offense has beoome so com' tuon and so venial, that conscience. less men have, no fear of being punished for- il, and proseouting ofiicers apparently account it too trivial for notice. What is worse, per- haps, the deliberate perjurer Is not made to feel the force of publio scorn and contempt he so richly merits; and men of good standing in the oommun ity continue to treat him as though tbe crime of false swearing was a trivial matter. If the law cannot be enforced if the prosecuting officers and the courts think tbe offense too slight for their notice, and publio opinion tolerates it, why not repeal it? What earthly meaning has the up lifted hand, the empty formula, the mumbled ad jura tion. or that relio of superstition still olung to in some states, the book kissing, if after it men can go right on lying with impunity P Batter, a great deal, put the witness on his honor as a man, with social proscription as the penalty for lying, than to go on as now, letting perjurers make a religious solemnity of a crime against God and man. Tint Rincon Weekly furnishos the information that C. T. Jordan, who has just been elected president of tbe agricultural college at Las Cruces, this Territory, was born in Roanoke, Virginia, in 1855. He was educated at Roanoke college and later took a special course at tbe University of Virginia. He was superintendent of public instruction for Augusta county, president of tbe state teachers' asso ciation, assistant superintendent of tho Miller manual labor school, which has tbe largest endowment and is the best equipped school in the south. He has also been connected with various other high-grade institutions in Virginia. For some time, -.r he has been doing Asol&l flrovemmont work in the Iftnd 1 1 oflice at Las Cruces. ii I 1 hb decision ol Judge G. D. Bants, in the Reymond Ascarate contest case, down in Dofia Ana county, is just and right, and is hailed with delight by every law-abiding citizen of New .'Mexico, It means an era ,of reform in affairs of that county, and that the six-shooter and the Winchester will have to dis appear and law-and-order citizens will be able to walk the streets of Las Cruces and travel on the roads of tbat county in safety. It is understood tbat tbe redoubtable Fat F. Garrett is to be Mr. Reymond's chief deputy, and it may even be tbat be will be ap pointed sheriff by a republican board of county commissioners, should Mr. Raymond see fit to resign that office John O'Connor, better known in New Mexico as "Capt. John P. Hy. land," formerly of Kingston, down tbe country, has luckily escaped with a light sentence at St. Joseph, Mo .where be was fined $100 and costs for the ap propnation of post-office money at Marysville, Mo., fifteen years ago What has beoome of the grave charge ot bigamy is not known in these parts, but it has perhaps been adjusted in some way, as O'Connor alias Hyland is once more out of the clutches of the law and at will to again prey upon un suspecting communities in the land. It is understood in Las Vegas that Governor Thornton will leave Panta Fe, to-nfght, for Washington Oity, whither he goes ostensibly to fight the measure proposed tn validate a lot of Santa Fe county bonds, but primarily to look also after the New Mexico en abling act, and which there is a chance now of passing. The democratic of. Qcials are not in favor of statehood for Now Mextoo, at this time, or under a republican administration. They fear the new state will ba republican and that their occupations will be gone. JubGiNO from his recent unguarded utterances, President Cleveland would seem to have forgotten tbat be was nominated for the presidency, three years ago, by the vote and influence of tbe New Mexico delegation. Ferbaps, though, this is but another reason wby the Territory should be damned. None But Ayer's at the World's Fair. Aver's Sarsapanlla enjoys tbe ex traordinary distinction of having been the only blood purifier allowed an ex hibit at the World's fair, Cbioago. Manufacturers of other Sarsaparlllas sought oy every mtans to obtain showing of their goods, but tbey were an turned away under tbe application of the rule forbidding tbe entry ol patent medicines and nostrums. Tbe decision of the W -ild'a fair authorities in favor of AyerV Sarsapanlla was in effect as follows: "Ayer's Sarsapanlla is not a patent medicine, ft does not belong to the list of nostrums. It is here on its merits." BIDS FOR SUPPLIES. New Mexico Pknitknturt
