The principles upon which you have constructed your medicine, would be rea dily recognized as in accordance with the sci ence of Physic, and the Fever and Airue always admitting of one uniform mode of treatment, your Mixture may be administered with its usu al advantage in every case of the complaint. iMri GAZETTE. By BjGAK S.NO^V'UE.^.__ T ERM*. _ __ *a nor annum. Country paper _ 5 per annum. The ALEXANDRIA OAZET rB for the coun try is printed on Tuesday, Thuisday, All advertisements appear in both papers, and are inserted at the usual rates._ Isaac Hill and Amos Kendall.-During the debate in the Virginia House of Delegate*, which preceded the election of Public Printer, (and for which we regret that we have not room.) Mr. Barton, of Frederick, delineated, in glowing colors, the evils of a licentious press, cherished by the patronage of government We quote the following paragraph from his apeech: “I ask if it can be denied that there has been an undue influence exercised by the press j throughout the country—an influence so enor-, tnousV to m ike it a cu-se upon this free peo- j nle What would Isaac Hill have been, at this moment, if it had not been for the New Hamp- j shire Patriot? Bv what other means could such a man have forced himself into the high places of the nation? Did you ever see him, Mr. Speak er? He is a man on whose face Nature has j stamped the indelible impress of knavery—a ca veat of warning to his fellow men! What would Amos Kendall have been, had he not climed in to power hy the aid of the pres-?—Amos Ken dall, who went an adventurer from New Eng land to the wilds of the West, and there verified the f.ible of the husbandman and the viper stinging with deadly venom the bosom of his benefactor—friend! Such have been some of the fruits of th it undue influence of a licentious dress, of whi- h i have spoken. These reptiles would have re named obscurely crawling thro’ the crevices of their native granite state, had not the press warmed them into vitality and oower. Mr. Barton would be frank. He had never been an advocate for the pretensions of General Jackson to the Presidency, but he would do justice to his honesty and good intentions; compared to such men as these, lie is an angel of light, the presiding genius of purity iNelt. And now. said Mr. 15., that lie is retiring from office, and when his good name is in some de gree becoming the common property of the na tion it is to he deeply lamented, that his unsus pecting c *nfi fence should resign h in into the coils aiid folds of unprincipled creatures who would crush the better part of him—his reputa tion—into their foul embraces. If lie had spo ken too harsly of these men, he would, if con vinced of it, make reparation. If there^ was a gentleman present who knew Messrs. Kendall and Hill, and who would vouch for their cha racters, he would do them ample justice. He believed, however, they deserved all he had at tributed to them.” New York Post Office We mentioned n Monday, by mistake, that a porter in the office of the New York Journal of Commerce had oeen caught in stealing and selling newspapers. It was a'cl^rk or attendant in the New York Post Office that was thus detected. The Courier and Enquirer contains a report of his examina tion, which goes to prove, that a system of si milar fraud has f >r a long time been practiced in that post office, to a very considerable daily amount. Th° witness, who purchased the newspapers of the prisoner, deposed tti.it lie had at fine time purchased of him 1,700, at 25 cents per hundred. The last p irchase was m «de on Tuesday of last week, when he bought 300. Most of the papers had wrappers on them, and directions hich were however, torn off by Mills, the prisoner. He had frequently purchased the Courier and Enquirer on the day it issued George M’Phersim, a clerk, who had the ps peci il care of the newspaper depai tment. at tempted t prove that the city p ipe s were those gratuitously served to the cieik- in the post of fice; hut. unfortunately for him, it appealed that many of them had parts of wrappers on them. We were particularly struck with the subjoined question and answer: Question.—Is there not part of a wrapper on one of tho-e papers? if so, how do jou ac count for it- being in .V/ town, and has beei laid dow n here at full three half pence per lb less than it could have been bought for in thi: market. It is only fair to observe that 'his yurt was probably purchased under the influence o ttie serious depression which the recent crisi: in their monetary and banking system produce* in the United States, and that the price ol 22’: water l wist here has of late heeo decidedly high er than it was for some considerable tune pie viotislv. Nevertheless, alter making all due nl lowances on this score, there will remain in lit transaction abundant ground for becoming sen sit'leof the great importance of a timely remo vul of the duty on raw cotton. The trial of the Convent Itiot -rs, Mae went into Committee of the Whole on Hie state of the Union, (Mr. Briggs in the Chair,) aiul resumed tlie consideration of the i bill to regulate and equalize the pay of the oft. cers of theNavy—the question being on the mo* tion of Mr. Harper, of Penn, fo strikeout $5,500 as the |>J»y of a Senior Captain, commanding a squadron, and inserting $4,500— i Mr. Watmough spoke briefly in opposition to J the motion, and mentioned that the miiii prop,,?. j ed to be allowed was not a thud nf ij;,. amuunt I received by officers ol the same grade m qlf 1 British service. Our officers were uecrssarilv 1 brought into competition m foreign pints, 1 tlioeof the same rank receiving §18.1)00 ay ear, and were obliged to reciprocate with them the courtesies and civilities of civilized life. Tj,PV 1 bad also families at home, w iio were to lie maiii t.lined in the meantime, and were. be>ii!es, en f; titled to such a compensation as would enable t them t«i save something beyond their actual cur •_ rent expenses. He should not take this ncca i sion to enlarge and amplify on the merits of the S i navy in war and peace. He would leave the subject w ith the lemark, that the general |rin cipies of the bill would be approved of by the j House, as they had been well considered, and had met with'the approbation of the Head of 1 the Navy Department. Hoping that tlii> amend j mem would not prevail, In* lelt it to 1 he good feeling and magnanimity ol the Committee to decide its fate. Mr. Speight proposed some inquiries, to winch Mr. Watmough replied, that the bill provided for no decrease in the salary of any officer. The r 1 pay of the Assistant Surgeons u.is graduated e after deliberation and consultation with them, p The whole addition proposed to the piesent ag gregate amount of the pay, was two or three hundred thousand dollars. The difference be tween the pay of the navy and the army, sprung from the allowance of prize money to the navy during war; no increase had taken place in tic 1 pay ol the navy since its first organization.and p no attention had been paid to the memorials and petitions of its honorable, liigliminded, and mortified officers. Mr. Fillmore rose to make some inquiries. He understood that both the subject of the pay of the army and navy, weie originally referred to a select committee. That committee r**portf*d a bill, to equalize and regulate the pay of offi cers of the army and navy. But the plan of equalization was abandoned, and the regulation I ol the pay of the army left out of the question. The amendment reported as a substitute for the 1 bill, proposes only to regulate the pay of the na vy. Now, lie would inquire whethei the bill did not assume for the regulation of the navy the f highest rate of compensation allowed to the ar my, after adding to it the sum nf 7J.OUO dollars p'T year, and w hether the amendment reported as a substitute did not make a further audition to the pay of the navy of six or seven thousand dollars more. ,l.( Mr. Watmough replied that it was .rue hat the comm ttee had abandoned the equalization hill, having found the principle utterly imprac cable, h could be applied without doing a»ay w ilh the emoluments allowed in the army. u would derange its whole organization, not attempted to increase the pay ol the at• That subject was left at rest, and the cun tee assumed the highest rate which had before commended lor the pay of the aim}. 1 V j cretaiy of W at.
